Black Tide
Black Tide | KC Jones
7 posts | 10 read | 15 to read
A character-driven science fiction/horror blend, KC Jones' Black Tide is Stephen King's Cujo meets A Quiet Place. It was just another day at the beach. And then the world ended. Mike and Beth didn't know each other existed before the night of the meteor shower. A melancholy film producer and a house sitter barely scraping bychance made them neighbors, a bottle of champagne brought them together, and a shared need for human connection sparked something more. After a drunken and desperate one-night stand, the two strangers awake to discover a surprise astronomical event has left widespread destruction in its wake. But the cosmic lightshow was only part of something much bigger, and far more terrifying. When a set of lost car keys leaves them stranded on an empty stretch of Oregon coast, when their emergency calls go unanswered and inhuman screams echo from the dunes, when the rising tide reaches for their car and unspeakable horrors close in around them, these two self-destructive souls must band together to survive a nightmare of apocalyptic scale. "This is gasp-for-your-breath, peek-through-your-fingers horror, and I loved every page of it." Jonathan Janz, author of The Siren and the Specter At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

4⭐
Once the story gets going, which doesn‘t take long, this is one helluva ride. Take two people who have a chance meeting of sorts, whose lives are already on a destructive path, and put them in a life-or-death situation; throw in an awesome dog, because obviously dogs are awesome, and that‘s the basis of this story. My experience with this could have been better if I had liked the characters a touch more than I did🤔.

When I first read the description of the book, I wasn't that impressed, How can two people trapped on a beach be interesting enough for a whole book. Well, I was wrong, because this was a great survival story of two virtual strangers banding together to survive an apocalyptic event. This is an end of the world book unlike any other I have read. It was tense and exciting. I enjoyed this book.

Reggie I loved this book so much. Such a surprise. And it had humor at times. 2y

I went into this book without any idea of the subject matter other than horror- but suffice it to say, this would be a good read for #TeamMonsterMash. I really enjoyed this one, and could identify with both the main characters, who both feel like hopeless screwups. Sometimes we just need real monsters to make us realize we aren't that bad after all. #TeamSlaughter #Scarathlon @Clwojick
5pts for the read, 15pt because of the photo prompt word!

Beth is house sitting near the beach when her and Mike have a one night stand. The same night, meteors fall and nothing will ever be the same. They wake up to humanity under attack. They make their way to the beach where they get stranded and their circumstances Just. Keep. Getting. Worse. There‘s humor, there‘s suspense, there‘s evil vines, but the win here is how Jones makes you like and root for these deeply flawed and human characters. Pick!

AmyG Reggie! Nice to “see” you back. Hope all is well. 2y
Reggie @TrishB you‘ll like it. Mike and Beth are train wrecks of human beings that just can‘t catch a break. And you fall in love with them because they keep trying. Hope you like it. 2y

vivastory Hey Reggie, I'm just curious if you saw Black Phone & if so what you thought of it? 2y
Reggie @vivastory I loved it. It had me crying at the end when his friend was like I was waiting just to be here with you. Also, I was pissed at the parents because everyday you had all these kids walking home and we know there‘s someone called The Grabber and no one can stand outside watching these kids walking home. Lol Really though, I really liked it. I haven‘t read the story. What did you think? 2y
vivastory Completely agree with you. I have watched several Joe Hill adaptations & I think that this might be my favorite. I also like that it's from his collection of stories when nobody knew that he was actually King's son, but in the movie they incorporated a few small nods to King. 2y
vivastory Also, all of the actors were great. Which is saying a lot because usually kid actors are kind of hit and miss. 2y
BarbaraBB Reggie! I hadn‘t noticed yet that you‘re back but I am so glad for that. It felt good to catch up on your reviews again! 2y
ValerieAndBooks Good to see you‘re back 💖! Just noticed, as I really haven‘t been on Litsy much lately. 2y
vivastory Reggie, I watched a couple of movies we discussed recently. Last weekend I watched St. Maud. I found it horrifying, but it was also one of the saddest movies that I have seen in awhile. I thought it was phenomenal. I also watched Incantation, which I thought is the most terrifying movie that I have watched in awhile. Hope you are doing well friend! 2y
Reggie @Vivastory didn‘t want to respond to this until I watched Incantations because I‘m at the part where he kicks in the shrine door and at this point they‘re just asking for it. I‘m here in the dark and it‘s pretty scary. Lol. And yes to St.Maud. That girl was mentally sick. That last frame, though. Oof. 2y
Reggie @Vivastory also now that I‘ve had a night to think about it that mother from Incantations was horrible. She did a lot of bad stuff. 2y
vivastory Yeah, she was terrible! I thought it was an interesting movie. It's not often that I'm unsettled by a movie, but that one did kind of unnerve me a bit. Last weekened I watched Blackccoat's Daughter. If I recall correctly you were talking about this recently? 2y
Reggie @vivastory Um not me but was it good. I think tomorrow night I‘m gonna rent Dashcam. Also, I don‘t know if you saw Men but I thought that was brilliant. 2y

Reggie @merelybookish Hi! It‘s good to be back and I missed ya‘ll a lot. 2y
Reggie @dylanisreading yeah, this girl, Beth. She‘s kind of a wreck. And during a cosmic event, it makes for even more fun. 2y
Centique Totally unrelated Reggie but I just finished watching Under the Banner of Heaven and it blew my mind. I know it‘s not your genre (horror) but holy cat balls it‘s opened my mind to how nuts religion can get 🤯🤯 I was so naive about that stuff. 2y
Reggie @Centique I think we‘ve all seen what any religion is capable of that can be called horror. What was the worst part for you? 2y
Centique @Reggie a few things - the power that each man had over his wife and daughters, the way they have living prophets that are treated like gods, the new “revelations” that men can have and be taken seriously - and their formation is so recent and so messed up. I guess it‘s just the realisation of power that‘s disguised better in some older religions 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
Suet624 @Centique while reading the book it was all the things you mentioned that really pissed me off. 2y
Centique @Suet624 I‘m glad I‘m not the only one! 2y

Beth, a burnout trying to get back on track, is housesitting on the Oregon coast when she meets Mike, a man at the bottom of a pit of depression. They hook up and wake up to a world changed in bizarre and disturbing ways. And then, they get trapped on a beach with an assortment of bloodthirsty monsters.

I liked this a lot. I knew all the places they talked about and felt the characters were relatable/likeable. The creatures sounded cool/scary.

night_shift Seriously, I will never not be incredibly upset when a brave doggo gets got. Rip Jake, you king of dogs. 😭 2y
