Daughter of Redwinter
Daughter of Redwinter: The Redwinter Chronicles Book One | Ed McDonald
9 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
Raine is seventeen-years-old and still on the run. She can see the dead, a secret that could get her killed. Seeking refuge with a deluded cult is her latest bad decision but rescuing an injured woman in the snow is soon revealed to be a horrific mistake. Hazia endangers not just Raine, but the whole world: she's escaped from Redwinter, fortress-monastery of the Draoihn, the warrior magicians who answer to no king or queen of the land, but to their own Grand Master. They will stop at nothing to retrieve what she's stolen. Raine must survive by her wits, and her skill with a bow in a world turned upside down. A battle, a betrayal and a horrific revelation finds her herself inside Redwinter, where anyone caught communing with ghosts is put to death. As conspirators plot to release an ancient enemy, Raine's ability to see the dead might be their only hope, but to use her power would see her condemned. Praise for Ed McDonald: 'Dark, twisty and excellent' - Mark Lawrence, bestselling author of Prince of Thorns 'Ed McDonald handles action with a deft hand and has created compelling central characters who remains likeable despite a lengthy list of flaws.'- Anthony Ryan, New York Times bestselling author of The Legion of Flame 'Original world-building and unforgettable characters make Blackwing a dark, powerful debut.' - Brian Staveley, author of Skullsworn 'Blackwing is potent, gritty, bloody, and splendid'-Faith Hunter, New York Times bestselling author of Cold Reign 'Blackwing is a bloody, gritty fantasy novel that manages not to sacrifice its heart. I love the world, which feel strange and lived-in, and strength of the voice is fantastic. Fans of Glen Cook's The Black Company or Joe Abercrombie's The First Law series will be very happy with this one' - Django Wexler, author of The Guns of Empire 'This is an astonishingly accomplished debut - McDonald is definitely one to watch' - Peter Mclean, author of Priest of Bones

I won the third book of this series in a Goodreads giveaway but don‘t remember the first and haven‘t read the second. 😬 So starting a reread before reading the second and third books.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I really enjoyed this one! The magic system McDonald created is so interesting, and it was a journey as Raine figured out who she could trust & how everyone was connected as she was thrust into a new world.
I *highly* recommend the audiobook as MacLaren is an excellent reader, and it really helped me, as an American reader, with the pronunciation of many of the Scottish-based words.
Can‘t wait for book 2!

This was my first book by McDonald but it won‘t be my last. I loved this story about a young woman who can see the dead & who soon finds herself surrounded by powerful people who would kill her if they knew…& yet, it might just be that ability that saves them all. Magic, the dead, political intrigue, rivalries, betrayal, & loads of twists & turns made this a very interesting fantasy & I‘m definitely looking forward to the next book.

I enjoyed this book. Nice audio!! Now I want to read the Raven‘s Mark trilogy! It‘s a good start to a promising series! The hardcover has pretty blue sprayed edges and this special edition is signed & limited to 750!!

“‘Man is ever bound by obligations, but to lose them gives no freedom but abandonment.‘ That‘s Eudiricles. He was saying that it‘s our bonds to others that allow us freedom, that to be without ties is to be floating in chaos. Man must seek out obligations if he is to be whole.”

🎧 I listened to this book & really enjoyed it. The narration was good with accents & discernible voices.

Raine is a good solid main character. This is the foundation of a series, there‘s a lot of explanation & description so you can imagine this world. Raine has a secret that could cause her life, she‘s died twice already & isn‘t sure if she wants to take her chance with a third time.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 👇🏻👇🏻

Twainy This is a wonderful first person character study. Raine‘s inner monologue was not that of an annoying MC in a YA novel! She did make some bad choices but they fit her character. She saves people, people save her, she kills people, people try to kill her, she lies, she‘s lied to … 👇🏻 3y

Slice of life, coming of age, ehhh a wizarding warrior type school/monastery where most can learn as apprentices but Raine is relegated to being the hired help, epic fantasy, action adventure with magic, swords & bows!

I‘ve already ordered a special edition hardcover.

Publication date - 6/28/22
