Forest of Stolen Girls | June Hur
17 posts | 17 read | 22 to read
Suspenseful and richly atmospheric, June Hur's The Forest of Stolen Girls is a haunting historical mystery sure to keep readers guessing until the last page.1426, Joseon (Korea). Hwani's family has never been the same since she and her younger sister went missing and were later found unconscious in the forest near a gruesome crime scene. Years later, Detective Min--Hwani's father--learns that thirteen girls have recently disappeared from the same forest that nearly stole his daughters. He travels to their hometown on the island of Jeju to investigate... only to vanish as well. Determined to find her father and solve the case that tore their family apart, Hwani returns home to pick up the trail. As she digs into the secrets of the small village--and collides with her now estranged sister, Maewol--Hwani comes to realize that the answer could lie within her own buried memories of what happened in the forest all those years ago. Praise for The Forest of Stolen Girls: Junior Library Guild SelectionThe Forest of Stolen Girls is a haunting, breathtaking tale that will have readers on the edge of their seats. ... Hur is an absolute master of mystery, and I will be reading her gorgeous books for years to come. --Adalyn Grace, New York Times-bestselling author of All the Stars and Teeth Rich, exquisite, and deeply atmospheric, The Forest of Stolen Girls draws the reader in from the very first page and doesn't let go. A dark and utterly engrossing mystery, beautifully drawn from start to finish. --Kathleen Glasgow, New York Times-bestselling author of Girl in Pieces Haunting and lyrical. Beware, this tale will draw you deeper into the forest than you want to go. --Stacey Lee, award-winning author of The Downstairs Girl A brilliant historical fiction mystery that is suspenseful, gorgeous and absolutely riveting! Hur brings Jeju Island during the early Joseon period completely to life in a rich, evocative manner that reminds me of watching my favorite historical Kdrama." --Ellen Oh, author of the Prophecy series

Interesting setting (1400s, what is now Korea), but I just never really got caught up in the story. The main character was supposed to be good at detecting but kind of just blundered around accusing everyone.

Finished this one last week. There were elements of it I enjoyed, but overall, I had a hard time getting into it, and didn't care much about the outcome of the "mystery. #Bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

What a fantastic mystery! Lots of history that was new to me, but without it feeling like a lesson, more just excellent world-building. The characters felt real and authentic, and there were plenty of satisfying twists and turns in the plot. A delight to read.

I wasn‘t sure going in to this one, but I ended up liking it quite a lot. The true parts of the history behind it were sad, and I had never heard about it!

@rachelsbrittain thank you so very much for this swap package! What a beautiful abundance of books 😍. Every one of them sounds fantastic! I know exactly what my plans will be tonight- I'll be in the tub, soaking in the bath salts, eating the chocolate (I love dark chocolate!), and reading one of these gems!Thank you again, and Happy New Year!

I don‘t usually like YA but this was so interesting. A mystery and historical fiction with no romance 🥳🤩 finally! I love when women can just have their own stories. It was an interesting book and the relationship between the MC and her sister was satisfying to see progress. In a nutshell, a good mystery set in a time period and place that‘s overlooked. Recommend 👍🏽

I just couldn‘t take it — and it‘s probably my own fault because I should know better than to try to read YA. I don‘t enjoy them anymore but I was won over by the excellent reviews, different setting and gorgeous cover. I feel like I shouldn‘t even review this because I‘m not the audience for this book. I found it long and drawn out and boring. Though did enjoy the 1400s Korea setting. A true case of “”it‘s not you, it‘s me”.

youneverarrived That is a gorgeous cover 🤍 3y
Clare-Dragonfly Love a negative review that makes me want to read the book 😆 I love YA and this sounds really interesting! 3y
Chelsea.Poole @Clare-Dragonfly I‘m so happy! Lol. I didn‘t want to write a negative review of this and turn anyone off it. I‘m glad my negative review turned you onto it! 3y

I really enjoyed this historical YA murder mystery (and another stunning cover). But I beg of you aspiring detectives—if you think something may be poison, don‘t taste test it. https://youtu.be/40lTIGavp8c

“Somewhere on Jeju, this island of wind & stone, between the ancient Gotjawal forest & the cloud-topped peaks of Mount Halla, my father had disappeared.”
The opening sets the scene for this electrifying historical suspense set in Jeoson-era Korea. Two teenage sisters with a troubled relationship join forces to find their father & solve the mystery of 13 girls who had gone missing from one village. #Audiobook read by Sue Jean Kim. #CanLit

“It was 1426, the year of the crown princess selection—the period when young ladies like myself would be dreaming of entering the palace. Yet here I was, cast away at sea, headed toward a penal island of political convicts.”

Sisters in Joseon-era Korea investigate their detective father's disappearance and a slew of missing girls in this evocative historical thriller. Engaging and full of so many fascinating historical details. Definitely has me eager to read Hur's first book, The Silence of Bones, even sooner now. And decidedly one of the most beautiful covers I've ever seen.

Long time no #WeekendReads ! Sorry about that. Life got a bit busy, but we're back with some new questions this week.

1. The Forest of Stolen Girls, African Europeans, Invisible Women, and The Gilded Ones

2. My tagged current read has maybe the most stunning cover featuring flora / foliage I've ever seen

3. Rule of Wolves

NataliePatalie Glad to see its return! Hope you're doing well :) 4y
