When the world's largest search engine/social media company, The Circle, merges with the planet's dominant e-commerce site, it creates the richest and most dangerous--and, oddly enough, most beloved--monopoly ever known: The Every. Delaney Wells is an unlikely new hire. A former forest ranger and unwavering tech skeptic, she charms her way into an entry-level job with one goal in mind: to take down the company from within. With her compatriot, the not-at-all-ambitious Wes Kavakian, they look for the company's weaknesses, hoping to free humanity from all-encompassing surveillance and the emoji-driven infantilization of the species. But does anyone want what Delaney is fighting to save? Does humanity truly want to be free? Studded with unforgettable characters and lacerating set-pieces, The Every blends satire and terror, while keeping the reader in breathless suspense about the fate of the company--and the human animal.

This book (sequel to Eggers' The Circle) took me a looong time to finish. It's a dystopian story that imagines a world where Meta and Amazon become this massive tech monopoly and take over surveillance, medicine, consumption, and basically every aspect of one's life. The amount of tech advancements described in the book was a bit overwhelming, but also mirrors reality in a sense. I don't know, I just had a hard time with this one.

marleed I was in the minority being underwhelmed by The Circle because I thought too many social issues were touched on. It‘s a pet peeve of mine, and I prefer when just a few 3-5 social issues are introduced and focused upon. 7mo
Rachel.Rencher @marleed I agree, like I get that it's a snowball effect that they're trying to capture, but it made the book far too long. There were too many characters and ideas to remember. Also the ending felt way too unbelievable... 7mo
KathyWheeler @marleed Oddly, The Circle is a book that I liked a lot when I read it, but like less and less when I think about it. And the movie just cemented that view. This new book sounds very similar to it. 7mo

marleed @KathyWheeler That has happened to me several times. The one that immediately comes to mind is the tagged. I loved it while reading (fictional family dramas make my upbringing seem normal 🤪) Then I heard an interview where the author defends her fictional father and the fictional wife who stood by her man - fictional kids be damned. It altered my entire reading experience. I can‘t see the book without cringing now, or read more from her. 7mo
KathyWheeler @marleed She defended that father and the wife? I thought the whole point was how awful they were! 7mo
marleed @KathyWheeler Yes, she did. And dang, now I‘ve negated your view of the book, too! 7mo
KathyWheeler @marleed That‘s okay. 😄 7mo

As I was taking this photo on my porch, two moms walking their kids home from the school near my house started screaming profanities at each other. One accused the other of not loving their child for not doing the fun run correctly, to which the other responded, "Suck a fat d*** you c***". ???

Alexa, play "It's A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood"

TEArificbooks 😂 mommy wars are for real. It is their way of doing things or you can suck a fat d****. I have seen some things go down. Big Little Lies got nothing on the moms in our old school. One of the reasons we homeschool now. 8mo

Dave Eggers‘s writing is so realistic that it took me 6 months to digest and finish this book of how technology is running our lives. This is the second in The Circle series.

The most scary thing is, that lots of the discussed apps or functions, seem actually quite nice. Obviously should all that stay a choice, and not the only way of living. But this shows how easy it is for people to give in to easy things, instead of us thinking for ourselves.
Anyway, this book made me think, which is a sign of a good book. I liked how Mae played the silent part troughout the story. And Hurricane was just sad...

Imagine Amazon and Facebook combining into one omnipotent and unstopabble force....not too difficult to picture... The sequel to The Circle.

Leaving unrated.... for now

The Circle was scary, next day futuristic scary. This follow up was just as intense. While it's written full of satire, the humor is dark and truly speaks into the fall of human existence thanks to the spiral that is technology and the effects that come from it. It's terrifying and mind boggling. I just can't. I don't want to raise my children to live in the world that this book foreshadows.

Feels less futuristic and more next week...
Not a direct quote from the book but very similar to the storyline for sure.

A follow-up to The Circle finally comes in the form of The Every. I was giddy to pick this up and first in line at the library. In the beginning, I was excited to get sucked back into this world and humorous but creepy satire, but it was a bit long-winded and drawn out for me.

With the release of this sequel, it reminded me that I needed to go back and read the Circle. Well worth it and a little bit disconcerting.

Follow-up to The Circle, the target of Eggers' satire here is less the Facebook/Google/Apple monstrosity but the wider question of what we as a species are doing to ourselves in the name of "safety" and our determination to avoid being offended or disturbed at all cost. Funny and chilling in equal measure.

plemmdog Did you enjoy it more than The Circle? I just finished Circle and was kind of underwhelmed…on the fence about this one 3y
Minervasbutler @plemmdog I read The Circle when it came out and enjoyed it. This one is basically more of the same so maybe not for you. I totally get the criticism that it's a bit unsubtle. 3y

New book post! My husband bought a book & apparently it has different cover options. Isn‘t this one perfect with Halloween around the corner??

Karkar I asked my book seller here and he said that in the US there are 32 different color combinations. 3y
