Redhanded: An Exploration of Criminals, Cannibals, Cults, and What Makes a Killer Tick
Redhanded: An Exploration of Criminals, Cannibals, Cults, and What Makes a Killer Tick | Suruthi Bala, Hannah Maguire
7 posts | 8 read | 9 to read
2021 Listeners' Choice British Podcast Awards Winner Based off Hannah Maguire and Suruthi Bala's popular podcast of the same name, RedHanded explores real-life true crime cases to help answer once and for all if a killer is born or made. After meeting at a house party in London, where they discovered a mutual obsession for all things true crime, Suruthi Bala and Hannah Maguire drunkenly promised to one day start their own murder podcast. Six weeks later they ordered their first microphones and the rest is history. From the hosts of the hit podcast RedHanded (dubbed by Anna Paquin as her "all- time favorite true crime podcast"), Bala and Maguire have amassed a cult following of "spooky bitches." What is it about killers, cults, and cannibals that capture our imaginations even as they terrify and disturb us? Do we find these stories endlessly and equally compelling and frightening, because they hold up a mirror to society's failings and to the horrors that we humans are capable of? RedHanded rejects the outdated narrative of killers as monsters and that a victim "was just in the wrong place at the wrong time." Instead, it dissects the stories of killers in a way that challenges perceptions and asks the hard questions about society, gender, poverty, culture, and even our politics. With their trademark humor, research on real-life cases, and unflinching analysis of what makes a criminal, Bala and Maguire take you through what drives the most extreme of human behavior to find out once and for all: what makes a killer tick?

This book made me sad because I so wanted to like it (I am a huge fan of the podcast). And, for parts, I did. I enjoyed how they stayed true to their voice. The book genuinely had some funny parts to it. I also enjoyed how informative the book while being interspersed with real life examples. But, I felt like it was a little jumbled and didn‘t have a straightforward narrative.
For this reason I have to give this book:
⭐️⭐️⭐️(3/5)

On the podcast, I enjoy Suruthi and Hannah's breakdowns of behaviors and environmental factors that created the perfect crime/murder storm. The book was all of that and more. When it comes to true crime, I'm always curious about the why part of the crime. I like how they took apart cases each chapter to provide an example for each topic.

Zuhkeeyah A big thank you to @FashionableObserver for lending me her book! I apologize for taking so long to read it. 2y
FashionableObserver I‘m so glad you enjoyed it! It was a pleasure to pass it on! (Sorry it took so long for me to send it! 🥴😂) 2y

I wish I had time for podcasts! If I did, these two entertaining British women, obsessed with true crime, would be at the top of my list! As it stands though, I only listen to audiobooks because books are life 🤷🏼‍♀️
This one is narrated by the two hosts of the podcast Redhanded. They discuss crimes, how they‘re covered by media, and society‘s interest in cases. Feminist and racial injustice content as related to murders. A total pick for me.

This book was written by two women from the UK who have a true crime podcast. I haven‘t listened to the podcast at all, but this book is pretty good. The first chapter is all about the neurological and physiological roots of murder and is quite informative. The rest of the book deals with various killers and the circumstances of their crimes. It‘s a quick read and well-written so if true crime is your thing, you‘ll like it.

Often with true crime books, shows, or films, the focus lies mainly on the stories of who was involved and what happened, but they don‘t always get to the why.

In RedHanded by Suruthi Bala and Hannah Maguire, these two true crime podcasters dove into the science and psychology behind what can make someone a killer.

I am SO excited to read this! I pre-ordered my copy the minute I heard my favorite podcasters were releasing a book! It‘s been months of waiting! Now Suruthi and Hannah can help me pass the time at The Kid‘s practice!! #Redhanded #TrueCrime #PodcastJunkie

Zuhkeeyah I can‘t wait to read it! I‘m on a book buying ban so hoping my library gets it soon 🤞🏾 3y
FashionableObserver @Zuhkeeyah I tried to adhere to a book-buying ban. It didn‘t work out for me. 😐🤣 Keep me posted. I can loan my copy to you if it will take a while for your library to get one. 3y
Zuhkeeyah @FashionableObserver I will take you up on that offer. My library still doesn‘t have a bunch of popular books that were published earlier this year 😑 3y
FashionableObserver @Zuhkeeyah Email your info to me. I‘ll ship it as soon as I finish! Shantel.Schmale@icloud.com 3y
