On paper this was 💯 up my street: historical fiction, romance, Eastern Europe in WWII, Hungary. In practice this was not for me at all: too much telling and glossing over history, not enough Hungarian flavour (many of the names drove me crazy), and not enough exploration of the horrible discrimination the Romani faced. It just felt too generic.

Pickpick

A life of leisure and wealth was all Eva knew and what she would always know because she was going to marry a doctor.

Well…she was going to marry a doctor until she met Aleandro.

Historical fiction fans will be taken to a different setting than the usual WWII places…this book takes place in Hungary along with the horrors of the war.
