Akutagawa Ryunosuke, was a Japanese writer active in the Taisho period in Japan. He is regarded as the Father of the Japanese short story and Japan's premier literary award, the Akutagawa Prize, is named after him. He committed suicide at the age of 35 through an overdose of barbital. This volume contains Rashomon, In a Grove, Spider's Thread, Nose, Hell Screen, and Autumn Mountain.

Akutagawa is a masterful short story writing. Translating the Dostoevskys' Parable of the Onion into Japanese cultural setting was so, so well done. A bad person saved from himself by making better choices, and the consequences of selfish choices, what compassion really means. A lot to think about in such a compact story.
