American Boy: The Adventures of Mark Twain | Don Brown
4 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
Our popular image of Mark Twain is of a gruff, gray-haired eccentric, the outspoken literary giant who created enduring novels such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. But once upon a time, Mark Twain was a boy named Samuel Clemens. His birth on November 30, 1835, coincided with the appearance of Halley’s comet, streaking across the sky. A dreamer, a prankster, a lover of great tales, Sam Clemens spent his boyhood years living out adventures on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River.

This #picturebook #biography of #MarkTwain does a good job of showing how his childhood experiences influenced his work. The watercolor illustrations by writer #DonBrown are also quite charming. There‘s a short author‘s note with more info, and a brief bibliography.

This #picturebook biography of #MarkTwain does not shy away from the slavery issue. I also learned that little Sam Clemens was saved from drowning by an enslaved woman. #DonBrown

Ruthiella Oh, I wonder if that‘s partially where Octavia Butler got the idea for 3y
