Myra Whitlock has a gift. One many would kill for. She's an artist whose portraits alter people's real-life bodies, a talent she must hide from those who would kidnap, blackmail, and worse in order to control it. But since her magic only works when she understands the cause of the condition she wants to change, she cannot save her own sister from the undiagnosed illness that's slowly killing her. When Myra's offered a small fortune--more than enough to pay for a doctor--in exchange for a portrait that would resurrect the governor's son, Myra ventures to his legendary stone mansion. Once she arrives, however, it becomes clear the boy's death was no accident. Someone dangerous lurks within these glittering halls. Myra cannot do the portrait until she knows what really happened, so she turns to the governor's older son, a captivating redheaded poet. Together they must uncover the truth before the secret Myra spent her life concealing makes her the killer's next victim.

I really wanted to love this book because the #OwlCrate edition is SO freaking gorgeous, but it just didn't work for me on any level. If I had to choose one word to describe this book? Sloppy. 😕

In the alternative world Jessica created, people worship a god known as The Artist, and some individuals, called prodigies, can alter reality through painting. I appreciated the close relationship Myra has with her younger sister Lucy. It‘s a direct contrast to the dysfunction of the Harris household. This was a complete page turner for me, and I also enjoyed the sweet romance elements.

A gothic fantasy mixed with a murder mystery. I've never heard of such a book that instantly made me fall in love with with! Good magic system. I couldn't help but giggle when the August, first met Myra. I loved their romance. Pacing was a little slow. I enjoyed plot twists, how the murder mystery unravels, I did have a theory that was partly correct. The ending was happy, and I feel satisfied with it. It does end on an open ended cliffhanger.

The writing, of course, was wonderful, and the mystery in A Forgery of Roses was completely impossible for me to figure out, which is a rare delight for me these days. I loved the representation of an anxiety disorder and chronic illness (focused on GI disease). These issues are, I know, near and dear to the author‘s heart, and as a sufferer of both, seeing them well portrayed made my heart happy.

“You are not weak because you are not stone. In fact, I would say you‘re stronger because you feel things so acutely. The internal battles you fight everyday - you‘ve conquered far more than you give yourself credit for. Despite what they‘ve made you believe, you do not need to apologize for the things that make you different. And you shouldn‘t have to pretend to be someone you‘re not.”

I finished my January #BookSpin today. This is an ARC of a YA fantasy that comes out March 29th. Myra has the ability to heal and alter people through her paintings. She has had a very happy life until her parents disappear and now she's doing the best she can taking care of her very sick younger sister. It's part fantasy, part murder mystery, and part romance. I enjoyed it quite a bit.
