The Hanging Tree
The Hanging Tree: A Historical Mystery | Irina Shapiro
8 posts | 8 read | 10 to read
In 1640, Alys Bailey was accused of witchcraft and sentenced to hang. Today, Alys is said to haunt Lockwood Hall, the Tudor manor house where she died. When Nicole Rayburn travels to Lockwood Hall and begins to research Alys's story for a new book, she discovers startling irregularities in Alys's case. Nicole's suspicions mount as every answer leads to more questions. What really happened to Alys? And what became of her son, who disappeared the day she was hanged? Could it be that Alys's death was the result of a well-planned conspiracy, or is there another, less obvious answer? And who is trying to sabotage Nicole's attempts to discover the truth? As Nicole delves deeper into Alys's life, with the help of a handsome crime writer and a history-obsessed vicar, she comes to realize that things are not quite as they appear, and people will sometimes do the unthinkable to protect their secrets.Perfect for fans of Susanna Kearsley, Barbara Erskine, and Kate Morton

This book was between a pick and so-so Set in England Nicole comes to Lockwood Hall for a writing retreat, she meets an interesting cast of other writers.
She hears a story about Alys a rumored ghost that was hung as a witch in the 1600 hundreds she hopes this story will break her writers block,I liked the historical duel timeline but lacked luster thought it would be creepier but was more a mystery.

I really enjoyed this book! Historical fiction with dual timelines (one 17th century storyline with some old fashioned witch trial fuckery, one modern-day storyline with a bunch of authors at the same manor house 300+ years later for a writer‘s retreat), a bit of mystery, a bit of romance… what‘s not to love?

A great pick for #LMPBC #GroupW. This will be on its way home to you soon, Stephanie!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

BooksNBowls I enjoyed this one as well! Glad you liked it!! 2y

This is the first time I‘ve read this author and it was a really good story! Very atmospheric with dual timelines. This is a first in a series and I believe that the series is complete. Haunting and a whodunnit. Yes please. Also this one‘s available free with the KU program. #bookspin #scarathlon #TeamMonsterMash @TheAromaofBooks @StayCurious

Finished my #LMPBC pick for #GroupW and was pleasantly surprised with this story! I wasn‘t sure in the beginning, but the characters grew on me! I love dual plot lines/timelines and was intrigued by the mystery of the story. I wanted a bit more for the ending, however so I have to give it 3.5 stars! If Shapiro had tied up a few more things for me it definitely would have been a 4 star read! I can‘t wait for the rest of the group to read it!

I cannot believe this was free on Kindle Unlimited—ebook and audio. Don‘t miss your chance to get this book. It was awesome.
