4 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
In this atmospheric YA fantasy that is Wicked Saints meets There Will Come a Darkness, four teens are drawn into a high-stakes heist in the perilous tomb of an ancient shapeshifter king. Long ago, shapeshifting monsters ruled the Commonwealth using blasphemous magic that fed on the souls of their subjects. Now, hundreds of years later, a new tomb has been uncovered, and despite the legends that disturbing a shapeshifters final resting place will wake them once again, the Warlord is determined to dig it up. But it isnt just the Warlord who means to brave the traps and pitfalls guarding the crypt. A healer obsessed with tracking down the man who murdered her twin brother. A runaway member of the Warlords Devoted order, haunted by his sisters ghost. A snotty archaeologist bent on finding the cure to his magical wasting disease. A girl desperate to escape the cloistered life she didnt choose. All four are out to steal the same cursed sword rumored to be at the very bottom of the tomb. But of course, some treasures should never see the light of day, and some secrets are best left buried

Ugh I really struggled with this one. I wanted to like it. I really did but I simply couldn‘t connect with the storyline or the characters. #100readschallenge

I wanted to like this YA fantasy more than I did. It had ALL the right ingredients—forbidden magic, archaeology (yes, archaeology), strong female characters, revenge, ghosts, evil—but while I mostly enjoyed it, I was also able to put it down and not miss it. I did finish it and I did like the writing but I‘m not sure I‘m curious enough about where the story goes next to continue the series when book two comes out. Maybe?

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 147.
