2.8⭐️WTF did I just read??? I don‘t even know how to describe this one, but seriously 🤮. I wasn‘t really a fan, and I will be unhauling this one from my shelves for sure. But it made me uncomfortable, which is what I think the author had in mind, so it did what it was supposed to do.

#BookSpinBingo hello February… I can‘t believe January is already over. By midnight tonight I will have 13 books read this month. Still didn‘t get a Bingo but I‘m pretty happy overall. Looking forward to another great month of reading.

Thank you so much, @CSeydel for the books and the delicious goodies! I have read The Ruins and loved it and have been wanting to do a reread but didn‘t own it, so this is perfect! Happy Halloween and happy #AllHallowsReadSwap! Thank you at well @MaleficentBookDragon for hosting this spooktacular swap!

CSeydel Oh, I‘m glad you didn‘t own already own it! I had a sinking feeling when I realized you are a much more prolific horror reader than I am! 14mo

Ummm. Okay. I never read horror, but I thought I‘d give this a try because I saw it recommended and it‘s very short (I read it in an hour). But, this was just so bad to me. First of all, it was so gross. But the characters were just so flat and unbelievable sounding, it just all felt very contrived. This was not worth it to me! I did have to skip a few pages because I just couldn‘t.

In my book, the main conflict of the story is that the two main characters Agnes and Zoe form a manipulative relationship where Zoe has to do everything Agnes tells her to do with no questioning. It escalates really fast and then becomes borderline insane. Agnes wants to be pregnant but Zoe is not ready for a child, so she tells her to acquire a parasite in order to carry a living thing. In the end, Agnes commits suicide.

I'm reading the book Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke. It is a true crime novel following two characters, Zoe Cross and Agnes Petrella. The story is written through email and text interactions. I do not like either character. as the author is a man and he is writing them to be unrealistic and unlikable. They are not relatable to most people. If the story was less rushed, I think they could be potentially likeable characters.

This book was lowkey wild. I expected more trauma and sadomasochism but maybe I‘m just desensitised. It was a good read though!

I gave myself some time to process this book before I wrote a review in hopes that I could come to some sort of conclusion. It reminded me a lot of abstract modern art. There must be depth and complexity I am just not understanding? I was a little disgusted, a little confused, and a little horrified. It was difficult to look away and I consumed this entire book in less than an hour and a half.

I just sat down and read this straight through. It was…a ride. TW for…everything, I guess. What have you done to deserve your eyes today?

Reggie Yeah this was crazy. But in my 20‘s I knew those girls. And then very quickly stopped hanging out with them. Lol 2y

🎧 I was so sad to hear about Sharon. I‘ve read over a third of her TBR! 😁

Sadly I have multiple expiring library loans so I can only squeeze the above book from her TBR into my reading schedule. All of the books I read this week will be in her memory.

Great genre! Really messed up book. Thank you Sharon. 🙌 I enjoyed it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Gotta say, I don't think Zoe understands how tapeworms work! Or maybe I don't? But they're not gonna fly into anyone's backyard, Zoe.

Two girls? women? lesbians? connect online that starts off seemingly innocent having to do with the sale of an apple peeler but then devolves sometimes slowly and sometimes quickly into this dark relationship. I laughed at some parts and there was a part so disgusting I thought I was gonna throw up my coke I had just drank. I look forward to more LaRocca. Thanks to Charles from Barnes and Nobles for letting me read his copy.

Bookzombie Did you sit in the store and read it all? 🙂 3y
Reggie @Bookzombie I did. It‘s only 112 pages and the way it‘s formatted makes it a little shorter. Almost all of it is emails. One of the girls has a cute Messenger/email name. Crushedmarigolds. I only say I laughed because it was one of those uncomfortable omg I can‘t believe this is happening! laughs😬And yet there are all those sordid true life online relationships gone wrong stories this actually feels believable. Made for a great Friday night. (edited) 3y
Bookzombie 🙂 Yay for you having a great Friday night and not throwing up your coke! 3y

Billypar I absolutely love the cover and title combo. 3y
vivastory I googled apple peelers when I first started reading this. They looked a lot different than I imagined. Holy shit, that ending! Craziest book I read this year 🤯 3y
Reggie @Billypar it gets intense. It‘s such a slim book that packs quite a few mental image punches. 3y
Reggie @vivastory I felt this was very relatable to everyone who first talked to anyone online when the internet was new. And for all we know, neither of these girls is actually girls. I really thought that Zoe character was some old guy. But yes the “baby” that is both theirs and the part that made me gag was the rotten meat part. Ughhh 🤢 This book was sooo good. 3y
TheLudicReader I love that cover. 3y

An innocent online chat between two women turns macabre and deadly in this indie horror novella. Did this incident really happen? Is it an urban legend? You decide.

Short creepy little read. Landing kind of in the middle on this one. I think my expectations were a little too high. It didn‘t really have the impact I was expecting. Perhaps because the kindle version I bought missed the final police report, I read about that on Reddit. Which is a shame, I probably would have rated it higher otherwise.

5 pts for the book + 10 pts for 1 hr read = 15 pts for #TeamSlaughter

I've been hearing a lot about this book on horror booktok. It's a quick read at less than 200 pages. I went into it not knowing anything about it. The story is told through a series of emails and instant messages. Honestly, I didn't love it. I think it's an alright short story but I wouldn't put it on my recommendation list.

Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke by Eric LaRocca is a novella about obsession and how far someone will go to get what they want.

Set up as a case file that tracks the communication between two people, we see the initial innocent correspondence that quickly devolves into madness and obsession.

I highly recommend checking this novella out!

[ has entered the chat]

It‘s the year 2000 and Agnes is selling an antique apple peeler on QueerList.org. She can‘t make rent, her missive around the history of the peeler catches the attention of Zoe.

A fervent IM communication starts, a relationship forms. What starts as a flirtatious game turns into a perverse Master/Slave scenario, with Zoe pushing Agnes beyond her limits
