Annoyingly affected and cliche laden writing style. Hated the chapter intros with their semi-spoilers & deliberate vagueness, meant to tease & intrigue but just irritated. Plot was decent but full of gaping holes. Not keen on the tortured romance or the totally unnecessary death of the female MC. All a bit grim. Not the worst thing I've ever read by a long shot but a bit melodramatic for me. 14 year old emo me would've responded more favorably!
Starting on this one. Is it the first of a series, does anyone know?
It seems nicely at odds with the gorgeous weather - love it when books juxtapose awkwardly with reality like that!

My heart ache for these boys who's father is in Jail and mother who is addicted to drugs and depressed. All they have is each other and Jack will do anything in his power to make it stay that way. This was definitely a hard read and you need to be in the right mind set to read this book. Trigger warnings are drugs, suicide, death, stalking, mental abuse. I gave this book an A-
This book rocked my entire world. Upon seeing the cover, it instantly drew me in but the story line hooked me. This story mostly follows Jack, his brother Matty and Ava. We see the struggle of these characters bond to the past, relationships between mothers & fathers, to family.. loyalties and most of all - the struggle of simple survival. It was a definite page turner and I read it in one day!
I thought the book had a nice pace. It was fast and a lot of things happen that keeps the book moving forward. I was on the edge of my seat a few times. Jack has to deal with the people who are trying to find the money his father hid also. This of course gets him into a lot of different tense situations. Jack does not know who Ava really is but even with Ava‘s background, she does her best to help Jack and Matty.
