Loch Down Abbey
Loch Down Abbey: Downton Abbey Meets Lockdown in This Playful, Humorous Mystery Set in 1930s Scotland | Beth Cowan-Erskine
13 posts | 10 read | 4 to read
Who killed Lord Inverkillen? It's the 1930s and a mysterious illness is spreading over Scotland. But the noble and ancient family of Inverkillen, residents of Loch Down Abbey, are much more concerned with dwindling toilet roll supplies and who will look after the children now that Nanny has regretfully (and most inconveniently) departed this life. Then Lord Inverkillen, Earl and head of the family, is found dead in mysterious circumstances. The inspector declares it an accident but Mrs MacBain, the head housekeeper, isn't so convinced. As no one is allowed in or out because of the illness, the residents of the house - both upstairs and downstairs - are the only suspects. With the Earl's own family too busy doing what can only be described as nothing, she decides to do some digging - in between chores, of course - and in doing so uncovers a whole host of long-hidden secrets, lies and betrayals that will alter the dynamics of the household for ever. Perfect for fans of Downton Abbey, Agatha Christie and Richard Osman's The Thursday Murder Club, LOCH DOWN ABBEY is a playful, humorous mystery that will keep you glued to the page!

This was OK, but it wasn't exactly Gosford Park.

The mystery was crap, for a start. And the characters were mostly ghastly.

I can see what the author was trying to achieve; I just wish it had been more focused. If she'd beefed up the mystery, or cranked up the comedy, or gone for more social commentary, I feel it could have been more effective. Instead, we get a pinch of each, and it never quite felt like it was hitting the brief.

When you decide to write a mystery farce set in Scotland during lockdown, and you decide to call it Loch Down Abbey 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

(I was never going to be able to resist this cover, was I?)

There were times this felt a little over-the-top and was veering into the wrong side of farcical but either I got used to it or the author toned it down because the ending was so great!!

I must confess I was pretty disappointed in this book. I think they were going for a cross between Downton Abbey and Agatha Christie but it sorely falls short of the mark. Why, you ask? I don‘t care about any of these people. They are almost all highly unlikable and hard to keep straight, although maybe that‘s because I listened to the #audiobook - the end was decent but overall, this was a big disappointment. 2.75⭐️

Downton Abbey and Agatha Christie murder stories…if you like those, you will enjoy this book! I certainly did.

I'm sorry, but no.
This is a total mess. The it is everywhere. The pov is everywhere, with massive headhopping. Inconsequential events are mixed up with a huge amount of backstory. The large cast confused me, with characters undistinguishable.
I just couldn't.

I requested to read this as I was intrigued by the play on lockdown and the fact it is set in the 1930s. It wasn't quite the story I had envisaged as, although there is a death in story, as some reviewers have pointed out, the investigation barely features. Most of the family members are rather horrid & it was hard for to feel any empathy for them. 2.5⭐

Thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Hodder & Stoughton, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

julesG 🙈🙈🙈 I have been approved for this, too. Thought it was a murder mystery. 3y
OutsmartYourShelf @julesG There is a death but to me, it was more a family drama than a mystery. Some reviewers really liked it so do give it a go. 3y

This was an interesting read and the illness hits home given the current climate we are all living in. The plot is slow but steady and builds to a satisfying climax. I did find the ending a little beyond belief but it was done well and whose to say it wasn't possible. The characters are interesting especially Fergus and Iris. I did also figure out what the Lord had been up to and what that meant for others. #Netgalley 3*

Locked room mystery meets Downton? Sounds right up my alley.

This was an interesting read; it was a tad difficult to read due to the way the book is broken down and with all the characters, as well as their POV, but the story was enjoyable. I will say again that I really quite enjoyed this, but it wasn‘t much of a mystery. More like there just happened to be a mystery, and everything was really quite easily guessed.
