Shards of Earth
Shards of Earth | Adrian Tchaikovsky

The Arthur C. Clarke award-winning author of Children of Time brings us an extraordinary new space opera about humanity on the brink of extinction, and how one man's discovery will save or destroy us all. The war is over. Its heroes forgotten. Until one chance discovery . . . Idris has neither aged nor slept since they remade him in the war. And one of humanity's heroes now scrapes by on a freelance salvage vessel, to avoid the attention of greater powers. After earth was destroyed, mankind created a fighting elite to save their species, enhanced humans such as Idris. In the silence of space they could communicate, mind-to-mind, with the enemy. Then their alien aggressors, the Architects, simply disappeared - and Idris and his kind became obsolete. Now, fifty years later, Idris and his crew have discovered something strange abandoned in space. It's clearly the work of the Architects - but are they returning? And if so, why? Hunted by gangsters, cults and governments, Idris and his crew race across the galaxy hunting for answers. For they now possess something of incalculable value, that many would kill to obtain.

Decades have passed since the war ended and the mysterious, artistically destructive Architects disappeared. Idris, one of the few surviving Intermediaries modified to interact with the enemy, hasn't slept or visibly aged since. Now a pilot for a ragtag crew of spacers on a salvage vessel, Idris finds himself on the run as his past and future collide. Brilliant, inventive world-building from one of my favorite SF authors. On to the sequel!

Strange unkown aliens attacking human worlds for no known reason. A few humans have been altered to 'fight' them. Only a few survived when humanity drove off the aliens. But they didn't win. Just - the aliens left.
Nicely written, very complex and he did a good job clarifying as much as possible.

I love that the attacking aliens are so, uhm, alien.
Really interesting, and intriguing book.

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it (some I‘ve had so long I don‘t even remember why!). Feel free to join in!

#ABookADay2024

majkia Currently re-reading it so I can read the whole trilogy. 9mo
Octoberwoman @majkia It must be good then! I‘d never heard of the author but it caught my eye at the book store so I bought it on a whim. 9mo

Oh dear - I never thought I'd DNF this book after only 50 pages. I expected something mind-blowing from this one and was looking forward to reading this book so much.

Tchaikovsky, what happened? Why this information dump right from the start? Why all those fancy but useless descriptions and words? Do you want to be a Brandon Q. Morris or an Andy Weir? Well, you're not, and that's fine with me, so stop trying to be one...

My heavy duty meds (knee surgery 2 weeks ago) made this one difficult for me. I'll need to re-read when I get the rest of the series.

Fifty years ago an intergalactic war with hostile alien entities has left a former soldier with physical and emotional wounds. Now leading a ragtag team of fugitives across the cosmos, he gets involved with planetary cultures, galactic politics, and old enemies in this epic sci-fi space opera

Another great Sci-Fi adventure from Tchaikovsky. His prime is just so good. Lots of action and the plot was inventive. Loved the character of Idris. Looking forward to book 2 in the series! 4 ⭐

🎧 A comparison. Horton Hears a Who.

Earth‘s been blown up by an alien known as the Architect. There‘s a long & deadly war & they don‘t even know they‘re involved. We‘re like specs to them. Some improved humans find out that they can mentally communicate with the Architect one day & it disappears. For decades.

Now they‘re back. Only a few remember the old war. Who will save them now.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/3 👇🏻

Twainy Tchaikovsky writes great monsters, aliens & characters. Hard sci-fi space opera, for lovers of The Expanse. 3y

Day 1 results in the #20in4 readathon hosted by @Andrew65

Made it back home late yesterday after a long delay and a missed connection. Flying is mot my favorite thing to do but it did allow me to read a bit. I finished Imago, started Galaxy Bound and Shards of Earth.

The first book in a new sci fi epic trilogy. Fantastic read for those who love intense, in-depth sci fi space operas. Fans of The Expanse series will enjoy this.

1) 9/11. I didn‘t have to go anywhere and ended up sitting in front of the tv all day, taking in the news. I screamed when the first tower came down.
2) Bookstore. I‘m trying to be better about using the library, but I‘m really not the sharing type with books.
3) Sleeping Beauty. I loved having it read to me so much, I memorized it at age 3 so I could “read” it for others.
