Welcome to Anoka, Minnesota, a small city just outside of the Twin Cities dubbed "The Halloween Capital of the World" since 1937. Here before you lie several tales involving bone collectors, pagan witches, werewolves, skeletal bison, and cloned children. It is up to you to decipher between fact and fiction as the author has woven historical facts into his narratives. With his debut horror collection, Cheyenne & Arapaho author Shane Hawk explores themes of family, grief, loneliness, and identity through the lens of indigenous life.

This is a collection of short stories. Some are very short, only a couple of pages. I was going to say that I wasn‘t sure I loved that; but then I was thinking about some of the stories and I do! There is one with spiders that made me shudder. 🕷🤢 #SkodenReadathon #shortstory

This is my #Bookspin for November.

ericarobynreads LOVE this collection!! 2y
SamAnne This is on my list for this month as well. 2y

#scarathon2021 #TeamHendrix

A pretty good Indigenous horror anthology! My favorite was “Transfigured”, but they were all fairly solid stories, if a little short.

6 stories - 4x15 (Soilborne, Wounded, Imitate, Dead America), 1x25 (Transfigured), 1x5 (Orange)

StayCurious That‘s awesome! Any wicked characters or elements in these stories? You can tack on 10 points per hour read with my readathon if so… 3y
Coueriamb @StayCurious Oh yes- honestly all of them are pretty wicked! I‘ll edit the total to make it 101 then- thanks! 3y

I previously had the opportunity to chat with author, Shane Hawk, on the Dead Headspace podcast when we celebrated the first year anniversary of the show. By the end of the show, my cheeks were causing me so much pain from laughing for two hours straight.

When Shane said he would be interested in jumping into another interview with me, I couldn‘t wait to host!

Anoka by Shane Hawk is a collection of indigenous horror that is sure to stick with readers. It‘s haunting, it‘s brutal, and it is doesn‘t shy away from the difficult topics. It‘s also absolutely beautiful.
