The Church of Armes of the Light has battled the forces of Darkness for as long as anyone can remember. The great prophecy has foretold that a band of misfits, led by a high priestess will defeat the Dark Lord Darvezian, armed with their wits, the blessing of the Light and an artifact stolen from the merciless Spider Queen. Their journey will be long, hard and fraught with danger. Allies will become enemies; enemies will become allies. And the Dark Lord will be waiting, always waiting... Spiderlight is an exhilarating fantasy quest from Adrian Tchaikovsky, the author of Guns at Dawn and the Shadows of the Apt series. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Stop me if you‘ve heard this one: a priestess, a knight, a mage, an archer, & a thief set off to defeat a Dark Lord. Same old same old, but then...

along comes a spider.

& suddenly we‘re investigating issues of faith, toxic masculinity, otherness, empathy, & all the many shades of gray in the classic fantasy Light/Dark binary with complex characters & a twisty plot.

Also somehow it‘s really funny. $5 on Kindle. Highest recommendation.

ElishaLovesBooks Sounds interesting! 5y

Imagine if one of the Mirkwood spiders ended up joining the dwarves and Bilbo on their quest -

wait, no, imagine The Last Unicorn, but this time it‘s a giant spider dealing with being remade into human form -

Oh! No, this totally the fantasy equivalent of a Murderbot book! It deals with a lot of the same themes and situations, just with magic instead of lasers.

This book rules so far, by the way.

The fact that I still made progress in Spiderlight through the big birthday weekend speaks to its awesomeness. My kiddos turned 5 and 2 (they are 3 years and 1 day apart) and much fun was had by all!

britt_brooke Aw! Happy birthday, cuties!! 5y
Louise Wow, how on earth did you find time to read with all that birthday energy swirling around you? Evenings after bedtime? Fun photo! 5y

Let me see if I can adequately explain why I‘m so very excited about #starting this book...

The summary on the back makes it sound like the most boring tropey Tolkien rip-off fantasy imaginable, but I know the author‘s style well enough to know that this is all just set-up so he can mess with expectations.

It sounds so bland that I know it‘s going to be WILD.

chapter_fifty2017 Is so different , you are spot on !!! Expect the unexpected !! Enjoy 🤗 5y
Geeklet What‘s with this author and spiders? 5y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Geeklet @Slajaunie Seriously this is my 10th book by him and 7 have prominently featured spiders or other bugs. His author bio describes him as an “amateur entomologist”. Dude sure can write though. 5y
Slajaunie To make a living writing about bugs and spiders, I imagine he is a good writer. 5y

Spiderlight was a great read and even though character's seem unlikable you like them then like them a lot , it builds to quite an intense momentum .
It has every swords giant spiders & magic mayhem.
Highly recommended.

Here is my fantasy shelf, covering everything from urban to epic. #magical #aprilamazingreads

Jabberwocky Elric is sitting on my shelf waiting to be read! I picked it up because it was gorgeous and sounded interesting. But I just eventually kept pushing it to the bottom of the stack. Tell me more! Do I need to return him to the tbr list? 8y
Jabberwocky Actually now that I look again, 'Ariel' was in my latest book haul! Looks like you have good taste! 😅 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Jabberwocky Elric is prototypical Gothic pulp, a broody albino prince wielding a sword that eats souls. Great if you are looking for old-school sword swinging adventure. I still need to read Ariel but apparently it features a foul-mouthed unicorn so I can't imagine it not being awesome. 8y

This book gives you a new perspective on the adventuring fantasy party. It puts you in the mind of a spider, and it shows you what the other side of a glorious quest against the darkness looks like. Plenty of laugh out loud moments, as this book has plenty of humor. Popular fantasy tropes are examined and poked fun at. Fans of the fantasy genre will like this one. I know I did.

I haven't read a book that kept me this entertained in a very long time! Parts made me chuckle quietly to myself and some of them made me laugh out loud (prompting the odd strange look from my wife until I read it to her and made her laugh too!) and others brought a deal of pathos to the story allowing us a way of looking back at humanity using its own looking glass without cracking it too much. Full of action, comedy and drama - go and read it!

Book mail is the best kind of mail! I can't decide what I'm more excited about, Spiderlight or My Best Friend's Exorcism. I'm a little wary of Cursed Child at this point, it's making me nervous.
