so-so

I was surprised to find I quite enjoyed the Robert Burns selections. I liked several of the selections, in fact. Some of the poets on the back end seemed to be putting in airs in their language which put me off immediately.

GingerAntics There were a couple of poems that literally waxed poetic about how when women say no, they really mean yes. Those turned me off entirely. I get that this book was published in 2016, but was that really acceptable in 2016? This book needs some serious updating for the 21st century. E E Cummings was way better. TrishB I‘m assuming it‘s not the publication time but the fact they won‘t criticise the ‘establishment‘ poets. My daughter did the metaphysical poets at A level and said they were a bunch of pervy old men trying to get young girls into bed. Her words. She‘s not wrong. 4y

GingerAntics @TrishB that‘s probably more accurate. Hunt and Coleridge came off like privileged frat boys to me. I was planning to get two other collections of poetry similar to this one from B&N, but I‘m thinking I may skip them now. I‘m not sure. 4y

Chrissyreadit @GingerAntics now I want to read some poetry just to identify the poets who were respectful of women. I think the establishment can be shook. I suspect Sappho does not have poems that say no means yes. I do not think Edgar Allen Poe does either but now I want to check. @CBee any thoughts? 4y

GingerAntics @TrishB why should she fail for making an obvious observation? That seems ridiculous. I could see saying “don‘t make that the whole paper” but sure, put that in the conclusion or drop it into the end of the analysis paragraph. Come on. 🙄 I hate when professors tell students how to interpret stuff. Ugh. 4y

GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit Poe didn‘t seem to be that way. It was really just Hunt and Coleridge. I think it was Poe who had a guy sleeping in a grave with his beloved at night, so apparently he‘s cool with following his woman. 4y

Chrissyreadit You are cracking me up -reading these reminds me of how problematic some movies in the 80‘s actually are (especially my beloved 16 candles)I know it‘s comparing apples to oranges but women have been told their words do not matter and their bodies are property for a very long time. 4y

GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit right? The things I used to think were so romantic or just sweet end up being really creepy when you really think about it. It‘s sad, really. So many things I used to love, but have problems with now. 4y

GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit it happens with songs, too. Even more recent songs. I used to love 5150, then I actually thought about it one day and thought, that‘s weird and totally unhealthy. I had to take that song off my gym playlist after that. 4y

It has finally arrived. I‘m still working on removing the residue from the bloody stickers they insist on putting on this. 🤦🏼‍♀️ The front looks quite nice, and much less pink than I expected. The back makes it look like a used copy. I guess we‘ll see what the inside looks like.

So, I ordered this book because it was on sale and it seemed like a nice edition to add to my collection. Sadly, Barnes and Noble magically changed my shipping address to an address I haven‘t lived at in 5 years, and I can‘t get anyone at customer service to answer. I guess I‘m just out the $10.81. I don‘t think I‘ll be buying with B&N again.

GingerAntics @Branwen it‘s officially shipped now, too. I know the mailbox set up at the old address gives no way for people to say “this person doesn‘t live here, return to sender.” I used to get stuff like that any put it in the outgoing mail box and it would either end up in the trash or back in my mailbox. 4y

GingerAntics @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick so this has happened before? That‘s nuts. I finally heard from customer service this morning through Twitter. I had already given them the order number and my email address. They asked did the book title and the correct address. Hopefully they can recall it and send it on. 4y

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm fortunate that our local stores and B&N are open and haven't been too busy, so I feel safe popping in for a couple of books. 4y

GingerAntics @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I think ours is open. It‘s on the North Dakota side of the boarder is it‘s more likely to be open then not. People are much less cautious on that side of the boarder, so even if I could get there, I probably wouldn‘t. You can order online and then pick up curb side, but I don‘t have a car so that‘s not really an option. 4y

I guess I‘ve learned my lesson. When I order things, I‘ll always double check the addresses in the confirmation emails. 4y
