This... seems to be getting really weird. I don't think I like it.
I really don't know what I make of this so far... I inhaled the first 100 pages and then things went a bit weird.

I thought I'd heard about this one before when I requested it on Netgalley, but now I can't find the review I thought I'd read. Oh well, sounds fun anyway!
What a strange story.
I put this as a ‘so-so‘ simply because even though it‘s listed as speculative fiction I honestly felt there wasn‘t much meat to the story til the very end.
It follows a family who live in a region where technology has been shunned and the world is colonising a nearby planet called Qita. Although the characters were developed and well written I didn‘t feel much towards any of them.
A vague story, a bizarre ending.

Half way through the #buddyread.
It might be another of those masterpieces... 😬👀

Aliya Whiteley has a knack for cutting through to a character‘s feelings, but I‘m struggling to engage with this gorgeous book at the moment. I‘m not in the right headspace to do it justice, so popping it back on the shelf for when I can. Out next week if you‘re looking for haunting SF.
Aliya Whiteley‘s SF novel is a quiet, contemplative affair about loneliness, independence and the desire for connection. It‘s tightly written with interesting ideas and Cronenberg-style imagery but the characterisation is too sparse and I needed more from the relationships, notably Jem and Isley as a key revelation should have made Jem reevaluate it. That said, this is a thought-provoking book and I‘d definitely check out Whiteley‘s next novel.
I'll definitely be reading Skyward Inn this month, but what will my #BookSpin read be? I've biased this month's list around overdue ARCs, Goldsboro gems, and shorter reads that have been patiently waiting their turn and are starting to tap their feet at me... can't wait to see what numbers come up!
