The Downstairs Neighbor
The Downstairs Neighbor | Helen Cooper
9 posts | 6 read | 13 to read
An addicting and twisty debut about an apartment building devastated by the disappearance of a teenage girl--and by the secrets that won't be kept behind each closed door--that will thrill fans of Lisa Jewell and Shari Lapena. One House. Three Families. Countless Secrets. From her downstairs apartment in suburban London, Emma has often overheard the everyday life of the seemingly perfect family upstairs--Steph, Paul and teenage daughter Freya--but has never got to know them. Until one day, she hears something that seizes her attention: Freya has vanished and the police are questioning Steph and Paul about their life. Do either of you have any enemies? Anyone who might want to harm or threaten you? The effects of Freya's disappearance ripple outward, affecting not just her parents, but everyone who lives in the building, including Emma and local driving instructor Chris, who was the last person to see the teenager before she went missing. Each character's life is thrown into sharp focus as devastating mistakes and long-held secrets are picked apart and other crimes come to light--including a child gone missing 25 years before, and a shocking murder--that make clear that the past never stays where we leave it, and that homes can be built on foundations of lies.

3-8-24: My 5th book of 2024! Told in present day with one timeline from 25 years earlier, this is a story about neighbors lives intertwining when tragedy strikes. In a Georgian home in a suburb of London live 3 families. The Harlows on the top two floors, Emma and Zeb on the main floor and Vicky and Chris in the basement. When one of them goes missing they all somehow get involved. Told in many different voices this one caught me by surprise.

I love when a book throws me a curveball and I think I know or have guesses but I was so wrong..

Why I found this among two other books I had hidden from hubby on the dresser behind the tv.. forget that I bought it, sometimes I put things places and forget about it till I go organizing stuff.. must have been meant for me to find it and have it as my first read of the year, but o do remember why I bought it while I was in target, it was the cover that caught my eye.

This was an unexpectedly great read. I have had a hard time lately finding books in this genre that my true-crime drenched 🧠 does not pick apart into ruins. The characters were well developed, and the multiple storylines worked well, first separately, and then woven together in the end. I can't explain why the last star is only half without giving spoilers through opinion, so you'll just have to trust me and read it.😉

This book was a pleasant surprise! I hadn‘t heard much hype about it and it wasn‘t really on my radar. I came across it in my libraries audiobooks. It has a great cast of characters, multiple stories going on that all come together in the end and lots of twists and turns. A great book that sucked me in from the beginning!
