Vidocq! Master of disguise and chief of a newly created plainclothes police force, Vidocq is a man whose name sends terror rippling through the Parisian underworld of 1818and the inconsequential life of Hector Carpentier is violently shaken when Vidocq storms into it. A former medical student living in his mother's Latin Quarter boardinghouse, Hector finds himself dragged into a dangerous mystery surrounding the fate of the dauphin, the ten-year-old son of King Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette presumed to have suffered a cruel death years earlier in Paris's dreaded Temple. But the truth of what happened may be even more shockingand it will fall to an aimless young man and the most feared detective in Paris to see justice done for a frightened little boy in a black tower . . . no matter what the cost.

Pickpick

Set in Paris during the Restoration, or as one of the characters calls it “The Great Forgetting.” Vidoq, founder of the plainclothes police and Hector Carpenter, a medical student become tangled up in tracking the fate of the Dauphin Louis-Charles. If found, he would become Louis the XVII, a problem given that there is now a Louis the XVIII. Just when they reveal the truth there‘s a great twist.

Thoroughly enjoyed this mystery.

drokka @writerlibrarian just got back into it in the past couple of years. I hadn't stitched anything in nearly a decade before that. Audiobooks make it a success. 8y
writerlibrarian I favor podcasts myself while knitting. I'll probably try them out wit xstitch too. 8y
minkyb Beautiful cross stitching. I don't stitch much anymore but I did pass on the passion to my daughter. 8y
