Introducing HILO the funny, New York Times Bestselling, full-color new middle-grade graphic novel series that "Bone" creator Jeff Smith calls delightful. D.J. and his friend Gina are totally normal kids. But that was before a mysterious boy came crashing down from the sky! Hilo doesn t know where he came from, or what he s doing on Earth. (Or why going to school in only your underwear is a bad idea!) . . . But what if Hilo wasn t the only thing to fall to our planet? Can the trio unlock the secrets of his past? Can Hilo survive a day at school? And are D.J. and Gina ready to save the world? HILO is Calvin and Hobbes meets Big Nate and is just right for fans of Bone and comic books as well as laugh-out-loud school adventures like Jedi Academy and Wimpy Kid! Praise for HILO More giant robotic ants and people going 'Aaaah!' than in the complete works of Jane Austen Neil Gaiman, bestselling author Every kid would love a pal like HILO, andevery kid will love this book! Lincoln Peirce, bestselling author of the Big Nate series HILO is delightful, silly, tender, and most importantly: funny. Jeff Smith, bestselling author of the Bone series "Fast paced, furiously funny, and will have kids waiting on the edge of their seats for more." Jeffrey Brown, bestselling author of Jedi Academy "I LOVE this book. And I'm not the only one. My 11-year old sonloved it. And when my 7-year old daughtersaw it, she picked it up and loved it too. Hilo is alive, actionpacked...and amazing fun. Not sinceBone have I been this excited to see the launch of a series." Brad Meltzer, bestsellingauthor "The Fifth Assassin," Host The History Channel s"Decoded" "HILO is loads of slapstick fun with a touch of tenderness that kids will love."--Dan Santat, Caldecott Medal Winner "High energy and HILARIOUS!"--Gene Luen Yang, winner of the Printz and Eisner Awards, two time National Book Award Finalist "A perfect book for any kid who ever needed a friend and then had one with superpowers fall from space. Seth Meyers, actor, comedian and writer * "Universally appealing. A wholeheartedly weird and wonderful tale of friendship, acceptance, and robots." Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review * "Diverse characters, good friends, and humorous dialogue coupled with colorful illustrations and plenty of action makes this a must-have." School Library Journal, Starred Review "The most enjoyable hero to hit the library shelves in years.Good clean laser-beams-coming-outta-your-hands fun for the whole family." http: //blogs.slj.com/afuse8production/ HILO kept me flipping pages with its compelling mix of modernlanguage and old-fashioned charm. There are some big themes at play here loyalty, outsiderdomand the tyranny of technology but, thanks to Winick's usual doseof humor and action, kids may find it suitable for their grownups. I love how the book starts out with D.J. and Hilo being chased and then going into the background information. Had me laughing right at the start.

My students absolutely love this book. Has the same tone as all of Dav Pilkey's books but with a new story. With all of the laughs this book has to offer it also offers a heart-warming story of friendship and adventure. Loved reading it and understanding why my students love it so much.

How can I tell her to go to bed when it‘s summer and she‘s reading?!? I can‘t!!! 🥰 (She‘s reading the tagged book.)

janeycanuck I heard (or read or something….) someone the other day say they don‘t do bedtime in the summer for their kids. After regular bedtime, the kids can stay up as long as they want, as long as they are readying. It‘s a win on two fronts - 1. They are reading and 2. They sleep in the next day. 3y

I went to the UPS Store to return a book to Amazon that I‘d decided was too advanced for my 7.5 year old, and the girl working there also works at a library. She gave me some great graphic novel recs for my son. That‘s what I call good customer service!

Hooked_on_books Before I read your caption, I thought you were sharing a haiku with us. 😆 5y
LibrarianRyan Those are great recommendations. I would also add the Tiny Tittans, Mighty Jack (Zita's brother), Cleopatra in space. 5y

I really dug this book. Winick is great at writing kids, and he's putting his #superhero chops to work here, too! What a fun read!

I know this is a marathon and not a race, but every book I read helps me procrastinate on grad school work. 🤫😉 I have always been a big fan of Judd Winick, so I can't wait to get into this one.

Really sweet. My 3rd grader and I both enjoyed it. My favorite season of The Real World was season 3 in San Francisco so I love that Judd included a drawing of himself, Pam, and their kids

D.J. thinks he's an average kid in a family of extraordinary overachievers. Hilo doesn't know anything about himself except that he fell from the sky. As Hilo navigates being human, strange creatures start appearing. Soon, Hilo and D.J. along with Gina, an old friend, are racing to save Earth from a few other things that fell from the sky. I really enjoyed this story of friendship and out of this world adventure. My son was right, it's great.

Son loves this series and tells me it's really great. So what's a mom to do when she gets that type of report? Why read the books, of course.
