The Newcomer: A Novel | Mary Kay Andrews

The New York Times bestselling author and Queen of the Beach Reads delivers her next page-turner for the summer. Letty Carnahan is in trouble. Shes on the run from New York City; she has her four-year-old niece, Maya in tow, and her sister was found dead in the entry hall of her glamorous townhome. Letty believes she knows who did it: her sisters awful, money-grubbing ex-husband, Eli Wingfield. Letty can't forget her sister Tara's insistence: "if anything bad ever happens to me--It's Eli. Promise me you'll take Maya and run. Promise me." But run where? The only clue Tara has left behind is a faded magazine story about a sleepy mom-and-pop motel on Florida's Gulf Coast. Certain that the police and Tara's ex are hot on her trail, Letty leaves her own life behind without a backwards glance, knowing she will somehow get justice for Tara, and sets out for her destination--The Murmuring Surf. The Surf, as regulars call it, is the winter home of a close-knit but quarrelsome group of retirees and snowbirds who regard this newcomer and her adorable niece with suspicion and more than a little curiosity. There's a No Vacancy sign swinging from the neon motel marquee, but the motel's longtime owner Ava DeCurtis takes Letty in, offers her a room and eventually a job, much to the disapproval of Ava's cynical son Joe, a local police detective whose every instinct tells him that Letty is a dangerous fugitive, possibly even a kidnapper and murderer. As Letty tries to settle into her new life and help heal Maya's trauma, she's preoccupied as her late sister's troubled past and connection to the motel are revealed, all while trying to deal with the attractive detective's unwelcome advances. Is Joe a would-be suitor? Or a cop determined to betray her confidence and put her behind bars?

Murder✔️ Romance✔️ Mom and Pop Beach Front Hotel✔️ Easy and fun read. It may have been just a few degrees more than a typical cozy, but I‘m also going to call it my #seasonalcozies for July!!! 💗

julieclair Fun review! Love that cover. I‘m hearing Jimmy Buffet in my head… “Fins to the left, fins to the right…” 🦈 3mo

8/10
This book was a random pick for me, but I‘m really glad I decided to give it a try! The story kept twisting and turning, thickening the plot and characters with it. I really enjoyed the setting and characters in the book. Letty‘s character was super easy to root for and I adored her love for Maya; specifically her dedication to keeping her promise to Tanya! As a reader, it was easy to WANT to pick up the book! Definitely give this one a read!

Nice beach read, quite predictable, but somewhat entertaining. Not a book crush though.
Letty flees to Florida with her four-year-old niece after discovering her sister's body. In Florida, she stays in a motel, which address she found in her sister's "escape bag." There, she'll discover some of her sister's secrets.

I love when I find a new author! This is the perfect beach read…a mystery that finds Letty and her niece hiding in Treasure Island Florida to figure out who killed Letty‘s sister. A mystery and a love story with snowbirds of Florida thrown in for comic moments.

I really liked this book! I liked the characters for the most part and also liked the storyline. I think some of the decisions made by several characters were horrendous but it didn‘t take away from the story. Good mix of mystery, suspense, and romance. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I always enjoy books by Mary Kay Andrew‘s and this book was no exception. It is a typical beach read but also has a mystery thrown in. I enjoyed the story overall. I really liked the characters, especially the main character, Letty.

This book is the perfect beach read. It has aspects of a mystery while still painting romantic and lighthearted components.

I like Mary Kay Andrews for a good summer read, and this book was no exception. In fact, I didn‘t even find any of her characters annoying as all get out (which sometimes happens with her). The story was interesting and somewhat suspenseful yet feel good at the same time. This is the book I should‘ve had with me at the beach a couple of weekends ago instead of all the dark books I took. 😊

For a book tour last week, this is a good book for your beach or pool bag with some thrills, some romance & lots of drama. Letty is on the run with her young niece Maddy after finding her sister dead. A magazine article in the “go-bag” her sister had soon have her hiding from her sister‘s ex at a Florida beach motel with a kindly owner with a hot & suspicious cop for a son. A little predictable but I enjoyed the characters & setting. Here with ⬇️

Another great beach read brought you by Mary Kay Andrews. When this book opens we meet Letty who is on the run with her four year old niece Maya, after her sister Tanya is found dead. Letty is the main suspect, but she knows somehow her ex-boss and sister‘s ex-boyfriend is the culprit. She winds up in a small motel in Florida because her sister indirectly lead her there.

Secrets, secrets, and more secrets.  How many did Tanya have, and who killed her?

A delightful and at times comical read even though there was a murder and some unsavory characters.

Totally enjoyable….terrific, heartwarming story line and great characters.  5/5

Middle of the road novel for me. The cover implies a light beach read, but this one had the drama and anxiety amped up too high for this genre for me in my Covid state of mind.
