Cults
Cults: The World's Most Notorious Cults | Nigel Cawthorne
6 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
The inside story of the world's most notorious cults. The strange and sinister world of cults is a source of endless fascination. Their secrets, rituals and shadowy hierarchies make for some of the most disturbing and shocking revelations in history. Most chilling of all is the fact that many of their followers forfeit all independence in order to carry out the often sadistic bidding of a mysterious master manipulator - and continue to defend their leader to this day. From Charles Manson, who instructed his followers to murder seven people, including a heavily pregnant Sharon Tate, to Aum Shinrikyo, the Japanese doomsday cult that carried out deadly terror attacks, and the People's Temple, these cults and their leaders transfix us with their extreme ability to commit savage acts of cruelty and depravity in the name of a self-appointed higher power. Many shocking and international cults are brought to life, including: - The Manson Family - People's Temple - Colonia Dignidad - Thuggees - Aum Shinrikyo - Skopsty - Ralism - Heaven's Gate

⭐️⭐️ I know, another cult book. I‘m promise I‘m a well-adjusted human. This was a slow read; such dry writing and not attention-grabbing at all. It took me nearly a month of dipping in for a couple of chapters, here and there, mostly at soccer practice. I think the wild Manson cover kept people from talking to me, so mission accomplished. 😅

FlowerFairy If I‘d known that‘s all it took to keep people from talking to me as I read, I‘d have it printed onto a cover I could place on every book! 🤣 14mo
britt_brooke @FlowerFairy Ha!! Right?! Now you know. Also, if people walk up and ask about your book, those are your people. 😂 14mo
FlowerFairy Bonus! 😁 14mo

Last day in the public room of our favorite local brewery. They will open their beautiful new, much larger place in a couple of weeks. So happy for them! Also, I will *finally* finish this book this week.

Hooked_on_books I assume this is the Rajneesh who ended up in Oregon, poisoning salad bars. The cult was near to where my husband grew up. He said he would see the cult members around town. 1y
britt_brooke @Hooked_on_books Sure is. Yikes! How weird that must‘ve been. 1y

Dipping back into this one during soccer training. Will this deter other parents from talking to me? 😂🤞🏼

CuriousG I find the concept interesting, but wondering how you are finding this particular book? Is it a smooth read in that you get propelled through without realizing it, or is it a bit dry and more 'work'? 1y
britt_brooke @CuriousG It‘s a very brief overview of each cult, so not totally engrossing. It‘s interesting, but I think it‘ll take me a while to get through. I‘ve been reading 3-4 chapters at a time then putting aside for a day or two. (edited) 1y
sarahbarnes Definitely a strategy I would adopt. 😂 1y

marleed Such a sign of our times when reading such a book in public has you realizing other soccer moms might take offense :( 1y
britt_brooke @marleed Agree! And also, good, they are not my people anyway. 😂 1y
marleed @britt_brooke nor mine. You, however. You are my people! 1y
LeahBergen It would definitely attract me to you. 🤣 1y

My current read. It's a broad survey that covers a number of different cults. Some seem a little out of place to me, especially some of the historical ones, but I guess they all fit the general definition—it just varies in how extreme the cults are. Personally, I would've focused with more depth on a fewer number overall, though.
