It can be a little scary to be small in a big city, but this child has some good advice for a very special friend in need. Winner of the Ezra Jack Keats Award for Writer! A New York Times/New York Public Library Best Illustrated Book of the Year An ALA Notable Children's Book It can be a little scary to be small in a big city, but it helps to know you're not alone. When you're small in the city, people don't see you, and loud sounds can scare you, and knowing what to do is sometimes hard. But this little kid knows what it's like, and knows the neighborhood. And a little friendly advice can go a long way. Alleys can be good shortcuts, but some are too dark. Or, there are lots of good hiding places in the city, like under a mulberry bush or up a walnut tree. And, if the city gets to be too much, you're always welcome home, where it's safe and quiet. In the first book that he has both written and illustrated, award-winning artist Sydney Smith spins a quiet, contemplative tale about seeing a big world through little eyes. Winner of the Governor General's Literary Award A New York Times Best Children's Book of 2019 A Wall Street Journal Best Children's Book of the Year An NPR Best Kids Book of the Year A Washington Post Best Children's Book of the Year A Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Best Picture Book of the Year Named a Best Book of the Year by Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, School Library Journal, the Horn Book, Shelf Awareness, and many more! Nice little read

The illustrations are very nicely done. And the storyline interesting.
The story is set in the winter. While this book doesn't have much written parts, it could lead to interesting conversations with your young ones.

Chosen as this year's Kate Greenaway Medal winner, Small in the City is a lovely picture-book about a young child making her way through a busy city. I particularly appreciated these wintry scenes, and I loved the fact that what I thought was a child's narrative about her own experience, was in fact addressed to her lost cat. The switch in perspective was eye-opening.

Sydney Smith has previously won awards for picture books he‘s worked on with other people. This is his first where he‘s gone solo. The results are spectacular, with perfect pacing & moody art. This gorgeous #picturebook is on several noteworthy best-of lists and has garnered a Governor General award, a TD Canadian Children‘s Book award & the inaugural Sheila Barry Best Canadian Picture Book award. #CanadianAuthor #AllAges #kidlit

Ink and watercolour artwork matches the somber mood in this picture book about a child looking for a lost cat.

“Even the term “children‘s book” can be limiting. We all have limited ideas surrounding what it is to be a child and it‘s hard to dive deep when you are jumping from such a low height. Instead, we should be asking what is to be human, including children. And then just write for yourself.”
