Complete Stories | Edgar Allan Poe
8 posts | 10 read | 2 to read
Edgar Allan Poe's gift for the macabre-his genius in finding the strangeness lurking at the heart of things-was so extraordinary that he exerted a major influence on Baudelaire and French symbolism, on Freudian analysis, and also on the detective novel and the Hollywood movie. His psychologically profound stories of encounters with the marvelous, the uncanny, and the dreadful represent-in contrast to the optimism of writers like Emerson and Whitman-the other, darker side of the nineteenth-century American sensibility. Complete Stories | Edgar Allan Poe

Can anyone suggest some contemporary horror writers on a par with C18, C19 and C20 writers eg Poe, Shelley, Stoker, Machen, Jackson. Thanks Maxine

1. Yes, way more than I should 🙈 I‘m pretty sure I‘ve forgotten some but I‘m doing #eagerforedgar #lmpc (it kind of counts 😋)
A horror read along (forgot the #) and reading House of Leaves with my boyfriend.
2. I‘m not sure honestly. To something far prettier than my current name. I feel like my name is pretty boring 😅
3. This answer changes daily, but right now it‘s Square Hammer by Ghost.

I joined a book club. (After 8 months in a new city, it's probably time to make some friends.🤷)
My first meeting is tomorrow night when we'll discuss 5 stories by Poe. 🦇🕷️
So tonight I'm playing catch-up.
Tommorow, I will be a bit nervous. 😬

krismlars It‘s hard to make new friends, I‘m in the same boat. Have fun! 7y
mcipher Have fun! Book Club means at least you'll have one important thing in common right off the bat, even though it's scary. Plus there's always chocolate and/or wine. 👍 7y
batsy Good luck and hope you have fun! And it's Poe! Wine is always a friend during these things 😁 7y

JacqMac Bookish friends are the best kind. I hope it goes well and you have fun. 7y
BarbaraBB How brave of you! Do you like these short stories? I didn‘t, which would have made me extra nervous 😉 7y
merelybookish @krismlars Thanks! It does seem to take more effort as you get older. 7y
merelybookish @mcipher @batsy We meet at Whole Foods so maybe 🍫🍫but no 🍷🍷. 🙄 7y
merelybookish @JacqMac Thanks! I'm hopeful! (Just sometimes my introverted side kicks in.) 🙂 7y
merelybookish @BarbaraBB Thanks! I think I'm more desperate than brave. I do miss having girlfriends! ☺️ I'm okay with Poe. Mostly I like the ornate 19th c. language and he does create a good unreliable narrator. But I don't care much about the plots. 7y
BarbaraBB Having some girlfriends makes life better, I agree. A book club seems perfect to find them. I hope you have a great evening! 7y
Tamra Good for you! I bet it will be fun. 👍🏾 7y
mydearwatson I love Poe! Have a great time! 7y
Sarah83 Good luck 🤞 7y
Cathythoughts Oh good luck. It's always difficult ( I think) walking into a new situation, I hope they are all really nice & friendly. ❤️❤️👍 7y

Great way to start the fall. I listened on audible and didn‘t love the narrator but it definitely got me ready for Halloween!

Does anyone else love it when Vincent Price and Basil Rathbone read you a bedtime story?
