Every March, my county library system hosts a community read. This year‘s theme is food and the tagged book is the MG selection. I loved watching CiCi adjust to life in America through a cooking contest. Seeing her grow, learning to trust and make friends, and discover how to honor her Taiwanese heritage, was heartwarming.

This was a delightful, feel-good middle grade graphic novel about a first generation Taiwanese-American girl who navigates making friends and fitting in in the US, and follows her cooking passion to try and win money to help her grandma visit. Great themes of friendship, passion, and family culture. Loved food illustrations and pop culture/book references throughout! Content warnings for racism. #GraphicNovel #Taiwanese #Food

My top 16 graphic novels of 2021 - it was tough to narrow down - I was trying to get to 15 but threw an extra one on last minute.

This story has a little bit of everything: moving to a new country, fitting in with new customs while keeping your own, an underdog story, a contest, making new friends, family, and amazing dishes! I am awed by Cici‘s cooking intuition: something I entirely lack. I need a recipe or the house is on fire.

A sweet middle grade graphic novel about Cici who moves to the U.S. from Taiwan with her parents and enters a cooking contest to win money to buy her grandma a plane ticket for a visit. Cici and her new friend at the contest learn how to push back against their parents' expectations of who they should be.

A touching middle grade graphic novel following a young Taiwanese immigrant as she misses the world she‘s left behind, tries to fit in to the US, and finds her passion.
