the way God and the company intended
It was okay. I felt like there was more story to tell, but being limited to six issues, they left a lot out. I think a more fleshed out story could have been really powerful. As it is, the story is impactful, but just a little too lacking. The art is serviceable, but not my favorite.
A creepy feminist horror comic about two teenage girls (one Latina, one Black, both queer) in a Pennsylvania coal mining town with shady shit going on. Very cool to see Carmen Maria Machado's imagination take shape with Dani's drawings, which were appropriately dark and mysterious. Content warning for sexual assault. I appreciated how this book explicitly talks about how there isn't one right way for survivors to act after assault. #QueerBooks
This blew me away. @vivastory is absolutely right that it's incredible. Machado's writing and DaNi's art both profoundly affected me as I read.
CW for implied sexual violence against women and girls.
Did I borrow more comics/GNs from the library? Yes, I did. Am I behind in reviewing the comics I read yesterday? Yes, I am.
Horror & heroic lesbians, set in a Pennsylvania mining community. This bound edition of comics brought other literary works to mind—Miriam Toews‘ Women Talking; Nagabe‘s The Girl from the Other Side—while holding together as Carmen Maria Machado‘s own well-crafted story. Dani‘s art switches styles slightly with each issue, keeping things fresh. Creepy goodness with a resolution that includes women making their own choices. #LGBTQ #graphicnovel
Ms Karst: Smith was very important to me. Probably the most important time of my life. I just want to make sure that you understand your options. You‘re a fantastic writer. I just think —
El: Ms Karst, my mom is a waitress and my dad is on disability. I wish you got how few options I actually have.
How can I rate anything she writes less than 5 stars? This limited-edition including all 6 issues is STUNNING and I, who's never been a graphic novel person, found this story to be impeccably put together. Graphics and story goes so well together and the imagination behind this can only come from my one and only queen 🔥
Including a spooky town, supernatural creatures, lesbian teens and an exploration of the neverending violence against women.
