The Shape of Darkness
The Shape of Darkness | Laura Purcell
Wicked deeds require the cover of darkness... A struggling silhouette artist in Victorian Bath seeks out a renowned child spirit medium in order to speak to the dead and to try and identify their killers in this beguiling new tale from Laura Purcell. Silhouette artist Agnes is struggling to keep her business afloat. Still recovering from a serious illness herself, making enough money to support her elderly mother and her orphaned nephew Cedric has never been easy, but then one of her clients is murdered shortly after sitting for Agnes, and then another, and another... Desperately seeking an answer, Agnes approaches Pearl, a child spirit medium lodging in Bath with her older half-sister and her ailing father, hoping that if Pearl can make contact with those who died, they might reveal who killed them. But Agnes and Pearl quickly discover that instead they may have opened the door to something that they can never put back... What secrets lie hidden in the darkness?

I liked this gothic mystery. I predicted a few of the plot points and so the ending only partly came as a surprise. I have been wondering about something while reading the book I'm hiding it as a Spoiler in the comments.

This was as much an impulse read as a book that's been on my TBR for a while, but I'm using it for the Green or Red on the cover prompt for #RushAThonChristmasBingo.

#RushAThon @DieAReader @GHABI4ROSES @Andrew65

julesG Why does it always have to be "mad" women doing the killing in such gothic tales? Or am I picking the ones with "mad" women only? 11mo

Caroline2 Oh glad you liked it. I‘ve had this sitting in my tbr for agessss. I loved her other books so I must move it up my pile. 👍 11mo

Caroline2 Just read your spoiler… totally agree. 🙄 I was a disappointed with this one, bit cliched and predictable compared to The Corset. 9mo
julesG @Caroline2 Then I'm looking forward to reading The Corset. 9mo
Caroline2 The corset is sooo good! 👍 9mo

I have enjoyed everything I‘ve read from this author and this was no exception. A dark gothic mystery set in Victorian Bath with ghosts, murder and séances. My kind of book!

With September and fall comes the reading of gothic novels. Laura Purcell is one of my favorite gothic fiction authors.

Is the narrator reliable? It's hard to tell in this gothic novel set in Victorian Bath. A silhouette artist must come to grips with the truth about the murders which hound her.

For fans of Daphne du Maurier.

So, drawn in at the start, very readable, liked the alternating narrators.
I found I lost interest about half way through, then read a larger chunk.
I then decided it was too convenient as it came to the final quarter...
But I was wrong!! The end was clever and twisted!!! 😊😊😉😉😆

Oooh, not only is this by an author I rate, it's also set in Bath (my closest city and previous uni vourse), plus I used to papercut/draw and cut silhouettes as a hobby 😍😍😄😄😄✏✒

Bklover Great hobby! I have silhouettes of my two oldest children that I treasure. 3y

This is one of those situations where you can see the talent of the author, you can see the fine craftsmanship and the depth of characterisation. You can easily read the whole thing and find plenty of moments of excellence. Then you finish it and are left with a vague feeling of dissatisfaction.

I think with these types of books it is just a case of an author and reader not being kindred spirits. I am confident that others will really enjoy.

My goals for the #NutsInMay #Readathon are to actually get some reading done! Since the UK has begun to open up I feel I have been swamped with errands and been stuck in my car! I‘m starting with my #lmpbc read and then moving on to my real life book club pick. I have a whole bunch of books I hoped to read this month, fingers crossed.

Andrew65 Good luck 😊👍 4y

This is a delightfully lightly-scary ghost story-slash-murder mystery, set in Victorian era Bath. Agnes suspects Pearl might be able to help her find the murderer that seems to be targeting her business crafting silhouettes, but (as she points out on page 212): “Ghosts, it seems, are contrary creatures. Not the oracles she had hoped for but imps, out to tantalise and tease.” Full review here: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/new-releases/

veritysalter Great review, this is my next read. I love Laura Purcell‘s creeping and sinister style of writing. 4y

Laura Purcell has done it again! The plot takes in mesmerists, spirit mediums and seances, & the subject of phosphorus poisoning or phossy jaw - an all too real risk to those who worked in the match factories in the 1850s & beyond. Absolutely recommended. 5🌟

Thanks to NetGalley and publishers, Bloomsbury Publishing PLC / Raven Books, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

Another fantastic book by Purcell about Agnes, a silhouette artist living in Bath in 1854 trying to support her mother and nephew with her meager earnings. When her clients start to be murdered, Agnes feels she is being targeted and seeks out a child spirit medium hoping to find answers. Griping until the last page!

I‘m so excited! This is the book I‘ve been anticipating more than any other and I pre-ordered it. Laura Purcell has become one of my favorite authors. I‘m still reading two group books and I have two library books out, but I‘m going try to sneak some of this in as well. I‘m afraid to read it too quickly, but I also cannot wait to delve into this book. ❤️

LeahBergen I preordered this one, too! 4y
Palimpsest @LeahBergen I‘ve read the first chapter and I‘m already ensnared. I remember commenting about your shelfie with Purcell‘s books. I love her writing style. 4y

Palimpsest @erzascarletbookgasm yes! I read The Silent Companions, and The Corset, but Bone China is my favorite of the three. So far this one is very good with the same kind of spooky feel and wondering what is real vs psychological. Love it! 4y
Palimpsest @readordierachel I know! I love it! Fitting as one of the main characters is a silhouette artist who uses scissors to snip her sitters‘ profiles. 4y
