A Time for Mercy
A Time for Mercy: Jake Brigance, lawyer hero of A Time to Kill and Sycamore Row, is back, in his toughest case ever | John Grisham
Jake Brigance, lawyer hero of A Time to Kill and Sycamore Row, is back, in his toughest case ever. 'When Grisham gets in the courtroom he lets rip, drawing scenes so real they're not just alive, they're pulsating' Mirror CAN A KILLER EVER BE ABOVE THE LAW? Deputy Stuart Kofer is a protected man. Though he's turned his drunken rages on his girlfriend, Josie, and her children many times before, the police code of silence has always shielded him. But one night he goes too far, leaving Josie for dead on the floor before passing out. Her son, sixteen-year-old Drew, knows he only has this one chance to save them. He picks up a gun and takes the law into his own hands. In Clanton, Mississippi, there is no one more hated than a cop killer - but a cop killer's defence lawyer comes close. Jake Brigance doesn't want this impossible case but he's the only one with enough experience to defend the boy. As the trial begins, it seems there is only one outcome: the gas chamber for Drew. But, as the town of Clanton discovers once again, when Jake Brigance takes on an impossible case, anything is possible ... Starring the same hero and setting that featured in John Grisham's multi-million-selling bestsellers A Time to Kill (adapted as a film starring Samuel L. Jackson and Matthew McConaughey) and Sycamore Row, A Time for Mercy is an unforgettable thriller you won't be able to put down. 'A superb, instinctive storyteller' The Times 'Storytelling genius ... he is in a league of his own' Daily Record 350+ million copies, 45 languages, 9 blockbuster films: NO ONE WRITES DRAMA LIKE JOHN GRISHAM

Another great book by Grisham. I really like Jake and the story was fantastic. Not a short book (are any of Grisham‘s short?), but I wanted to keep reading to see what surprises might happen next. Black woman Portia is working for Jake and planning to head to law school; she‘s another secondary character I really like. I do hope the series continues.

I did enjoy this book even though I hadn‘t read the previous novel that included the same characters - it didn‘t affect the storyline or back story. However, I was disappointed with the ending, it wasn‘t really an ending. The book seemed unfinished somehow. I had become quite invested in the young boy at the centre of the story and to not have a total resolution I found frustrating. I did find the story interesting despite the ending.

I wanted to read the Jake Brigance trilogy in order and enjoyed doing so. This one set in ‘94 but published in 2020 did not do the thing that‘s a pet peeve of mine - infuse today‘s mores back to the story‘s setting. That said, a pregnant 14 yo supporting character is raped by a thug. Rather than professionals in the know immediately getting her the support she needs, she‘s used as a pawn in a court case. Geez, was that normal in 1994?

Cathythoughts Very upsetting… terrible 😭😡 I hope times change more quickly 3y
marleed @Cathythoughts It‘s hard for me to head back to 1994 when I was the married mom of a 2- and 4-yo and not take the wisdom gained from 25+ years of living. I guess I‘m thinking that by then we knew better and did better when it came to the rape of a 14 yo child. Maybe not. 3y

A good legal thriller, this is a second book with the characters from A Time to Kill, so I had to read it. Though not as sensational as the first, I enjoyed the story. I'm a sucker for a tidy end where good prevails and I was left feeling a little empty. It does have a good ending, but the story is not finished. Maybe there will be A Time for Closure next?

Read the book while on vacation in Tennessee. As always, Grisham does not disappoint. Great plot with excellent character development.

Grisham returns to Clanton and Jake Brigance once again. This time, Jake is dragged in to represent a teenage boy who shot the man abusing his mother - who happens to be one of Clanton's most admired deputies, which makes this a capital case.
Much is made of Jake's past brilliance, but this outing is not as satisfying either emotionally or as a peek at lawyering and the railroad subplot takes up a lot of page time before fizzling out.

Loved it! The third Jake Brigance book has Jake being appointed defense lawyer for a poor 16 year old who shoots his mom‘s abusive boyfriend, who also happens to be a Clanton cop. I really liked this, it‘s not A Time to Kill, but I enjoyed it more than the second, Sycamore Row. It‘s not a game changer, pretty much what you would expect and Jake is facing many of the same problems. A good cast of returning characters. No complaints, solid entry.

Prairiegirl_reading I felt the same about Sycamore Road so I wasn‘t that anxious to get to this one. Glad to hear it‘s better. John Grisham is great summer reading! 😄 3y

Boy! I‘d really like to thank the person who ate something terribly messy (I hope) while reading this. I keep finding what I desperately hope are chunks of food in the pages. This is not what I want from my library books 🤢

marleed Oh no. I shall not show this text to a friend mine who only reads books anew because the thought of turning pages strangers gives her the willies. Fortunately, for my budget and reading enjoyment, I don‘t have that fear. But you certainly helped me understand hers! 3y

This one, about Jake Brigance, feels like this glorious return to the early days of John Grisham. Don‘t get me wrong, I love his books, but for some years they‘ve seemed inconsistent. Just not as good as those early novels but this one? Oh this one is a beauty. It‘s a beast but it is flying by. Savouring it and a return to these characters although I could do with more Lucien. Hard not to picture the actors from the movie which was so well cast.

I‘ve read most of Grishams books and always enjoyed them, some more than others. This one wasn‘t his best and it‘s taken me ages to finish but got there today

This probably won‘t be a popular opinion, but I just wasn‘t that thrilled by this book. The story, which focuses on the characters originally introduced in Grisham‘s book “A Time to Kill, were all there but the story felt predictable. It must have been hard to follow up on the poignancy of the speech given at the previous book. I wanted a powerful moment, but Jake Brigance just didn‘t deliver this time. ⭐️⭐️ 1/2.

I got 10% of the way into this one, and I just can't. It's sooo preachy. I suspect Grisham found religion at some point fairly recently because the last one of his books I read (Camino Island, I think?) was pretty jesus-y too. After 2/20 hours, I decided to peruse the reviews, and they led me to the decision to dnf this one.

Prairiegirl_reading I didn‘t really care for sycamore row either. Wasn‘t interesting at all and it felt like he just named the lawyer Jake Brigance to get people to buy it. The religious stuff really make me not want to read this now. 4y
GingerAntics Apparently it‘s not too recent. I googled and Grisham himself said it was when he was 8. 4y
Traci1 @Prairiegirl_reading I haven't read Sycamore yet. This one popped up as a skip the line loan on Libby so I decided to go ahead and give it a listen. But I'm thinking now I won't go back to that one either. 4y
Traci1 @GingerAntics hmm. Well, maybe he's just lost his writing mojo. I loved his early stuff when I was young. Pelican Brief was a particular favorite. But the last few just slogged and read like Christian fiction. Which, I have no objection to if that's your jam, but I'd like to know ahead of time that's what I'm in for, you know? 4y
GingerAntics @Traci1 that‘s totally understandable. It feels almost creepy if it‘s not something you‘re prepared for. Maybe he‘s just feeling particularly zealous lately. Maybe he‘ll snap out of it. 🤞🏻 4y
