pickAnother great book by Grisham. I really like Jake and the story was fantastic. Not a short book (are any of Grisham‘s short?), but I wanted to keep reading to see what surprises might happen next. Black woman Portia is working for Jake and planning to head to law school; she‘s another secondary character I really like. I do hope the series continues.
so-soI did enjoy this book even though I hadn‘t read the previous novel that included the same characters - it didn‘t affect the storyline or back story. However, I was disappointed with the ending, it wasn‘t really an ending. The book seemed unfinished somehow. I had become quite invested in the young boy at the centre of the story and to not have a total resolution I found frustrating. I did find the story interesting despite the ending.

pickI wanted to read the Jake Brigance trilogy in order and enjoyed doing so. This one set in ‘94 but published in 2020 did not do the thing that‘s a pet peeve of mine - infuse today‘s mores back to the story‘s setting. That said, a pregnant 14 yo supporting character is raped by a thug. Rather than professionals in the know immediately getting her the support she needs, she‘s used as a pawn in a court case. Geez, was that normal in 1994?
Legal thriller with great courtroom drama
and small-town intrigue. Won‘t disappoint!
so-soA good legal thriller, this is a second book with the characters from A Time to Kill, so I had to read it. Though not as sensational as the first, I enjoyed the story. I'm a sucker for a tidy end where good prevails and I was left feeling a little empty. It does have a good ending, but the story is not finished. Maybe there will be A Time for Closure next?

pickRead the book while on vacation in Tennessee. As always, Grisham does not disappoint. Great plot with excellent character development.
so-soGrisham returns to Clanton and Jake Brigance once again. This time, Jake is dragged in to represent a teenage boy who shot the man abusing his mother - who happens to be one of Clanton's most admired deputies, which makes this a capital case.
Much is made of Jake's past brilliance, but this outing is not as satisfying either emotionally or as a peek at lawyering and the railroad subplot takes up a lot of page time before fizzling out.
pickLoved it! The third Jake Brigance book has Jake being appointed defense lawyer for a poor 16 year old who shoots his mom‘s abusive boyfriend, who also happens to be a Clanton cop. I really liked this, it‘s not A Time to Kill, but I enjoyed it more than the second, Sycamore Row. It‘s not a game changer, pretty much what you would expect and Jake is facing many of the same problems. A good cast of returning characters. No complaints, solid entry.
Boy! I‘d really like to thank the person who ate something terribly messy (I hope) while reading this. I keep finding what I desperately hope are chunks of food in the pages. This is not what I want from my library books 🤢
This one, about Jake Brigance, feels like this glorious return to the early days of John Grisham. Don‘t get me wrong, I love his books, but for some years they‘ve seemed inconsistent. Just not as good as those early novels but this one? Oh this one is a beauty. It‘s a beast but it is flying by. Savouring it and a return to these characters although I could do with more Lucien. Hard not to picture the actors from the movie which was so well cast.

so-soThis probably won‘t be a popular opinion, but I just wasn‘t that thrilled by this book. The story, which focuses on the characters originally introduced in Grisham‘s book “A Time to Kill, were all there but the story felt predictable. It must have been hard to follow up on the poignancy of the speech given at the previous book. I wanted a powerful moment, but Jake Brigance just didn‘t deliver this time. ⭐️⭐️ 1/2.

bailedI got 10% of the way into this one, and I just can't. It's sooo preachy. I suspect Grisham found religion at some point fairly recently because the last one of his books I read (Camino Island, I think?) was pretty jesus-y too. After 2/20 hours, I decided to peruse the reviews, and they led me to the decision to dnf this one.

October is a blur. Work was busy & I was out of town for 9 days. Having been "stuck in Lodi" since returning from Maui in late Jan., & at home since mid-March, my son accompanied me to beautiful Pismo Beach where we teleworked. ??? We're going to do it again soon.
I only read 4 books in Oct. But they were all enjoyable.
