From a young woman plagued by bad “moods,” a collection of strategies for self-management that ranges from sleep hygiene and meditation to the more problematic—like believing setbacks are always for your eventual gain. The author writes from a financially and racially privileged viewpoint that shows so little curiosity for why she is the way she is and little consideration for how her “moods” or behavior impact other people—only herself.

5 ⭐️! Martin‘s anecdotes aren‘t from when she‘s being her best self - her relatable stories are from those ugly feelings we want to pretend don‘t happen. Recognizing our triggers and dealing with reactions can keep these moods from running our lives. She shares research, perspectives, and strategies that have worked for her. I think I would have found this especially useful in my twenties, but many lines spoke to me and I took a lot away from it.

This book resonated differently— ironically when I was in a different mood. 🥴

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I wish I could deliver this book to my 25-year-old withered, cranky soul! Every chapter resonated deeply for me. While the premise of the book focuses on moods experienced by women, I would wager that it especially speaks to highly introverted women. Adding this one to the list of books that I‘ll give my daughters when they are older to protect their inner peace and be in tune with themselves! I‘ll be referring back to it myself.

“While I‘d always believed monotony was worse than death, routine, as Flannery O‘Connor pointed out, is a condition of survival. Routine is what gives you back your footing.”

The Book of Moods: How I Turned My Worst Emotions Into My Best Life by Lauren Martin is an interesting and informative book about dealing with emotions.

The Book of Moods is an excellent book full of honesty. Martin doesn‘t try to pretend she is an emotion expert.

Thank you Grand Central Publishing for The Book of Moods.

I wish I had read this as an ebook so I could have easily highlighted it and taken notes! Some great practical advice on how controlling your moods, whether it means approaching a situation in a healthier way or understanding how hormones affect mood, can make a huge difference in day-to-day happiness. Like every self-help book, not all applied to me, but there are some parts I hope to remember and use going forward. #audiobook

I‘m not big on self help, but I‘m actually enjoying this. Right now she‘s talking about how hard it is to process emotions or situations in families that talk without talking about anything important...not that I‘d know anything about that!! Lololol

BarbaraBB Haha I feel some irony 😜😘 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I think everyone does to a degree! 😂😂 there are a lot of very smart, relatable parts of this book. I may end up buying it! (edited) 4y

4.5☆Through personal experience, wisdom, research and candor Martin astutely puts into words what so many of us go through when it comes to the power of negative emotions. This book is about how she learned to take control of her moods and emotions and transforn them. So many readers will feel seen in these pages, I did! Even if you think you have all your shit together when it comes to your emotions this is worth the read. #bookreview

Megabooks I‘m reading this right now. 4y

I got this gifted copy from #grandcentralpub and it could not have come at a better time! I am seriously struggling with myself this week. Anxiety at it‘s highest! Usually, #reading relaxes me, but I haven‘t even been able to do that! Anyone else get that way at times? #books #readers #moodreader

This is actually a fabulous little book that is part memoir, part self-help. The author gives interesting information about what is at work with emotional reactions as well as tips to handle situations better. This is one I will be recommending to friends. #ARC #Netgalley
