I loved this book so much. It was sad, honest, and uplifting all at the same time. The story centers around two young Black brothers who have experienced tragedies in the past. Since that time, they both have been living with a gift yet at times a curse—unbeknownst to each other. This story is about being who you are, even when it scares you—and the reality of what it means to be Black in America. Some key take aways for me:

DNF @ 47%. Y‘all, I really tried my damnedest with this book, but it just wasn‘t for me. The subject matter is crucial & the relationship between the two MCs is poignant, but the pacing was REALLY bogged down by the rules of magic. Also, the narrator suffers from extreme anxiety, & as someone who struggles with anxiety myself, it was too much. I loved the author‘s previous book, Slay, & would def recommend that over this.

The cost of knowing is about a brother who can see into the future simply by touching something. So when he sees a glimpse of his brother dying he decides there is things In his life that need to change.

I felt this was well written. I loved the sibling love and also the different topics it covered. I gave this an A-

I was lucky enough to be selected to be a part of a book tour for this book. Wow! I can‘t believe it‘s taken me this long to read Brittney Morris, she is an amazing and talented writer. This book put me through various emotions and made me reflect on and think about how relevant this book is. This is a book that has various triggers and so readers should read with care. A deeply moving story about two brothers, 16 and 12 years old, and the reality of what it means to be a black child / teen in America. There are elements of magical realism, which make the story all the more intriguing. There is quite a bit of conflict, both internal and external, leaning on family, even those who have come generations before us, and of course lots and lots of deep feelings. A truly 5 star read for me.

Alex Rufus sees the future of any object or person he touches. What sounds like an amazing superpower is really only a curse. Unable to change the future, the cost of knowing it is steep, especially when he sees visions of his younger brother's imminent death. In addition, Alex is still forced to deal with the complexities of growing up too soon in a world of toxic masculinity & racism. This book had me crying both tears of joy and sadness.

Starting on another ARC. This one is for ages 12+. I‘m intrigued by some of the blurbs on the back cover...

Really enjoying this book, and this quote really stands out. It's easy to get overwhelmed in troubled times, or lifetimes of oppression. But being able to find moments of joy, pure self joy, is a powerful thing.
