Pretty decent reading week for me. Managed to not only finish my impulse reads but also one of my BookSpin backlist I've been working on for months.
#WeeklyForecast
My goal this week is to get to at least half way in Half Built and one or two stories from Pump Six.
This is my first Jane Eyre retelling and I really enjoyed it. I think it got the tone of the original despite dealing with a more modern setting and you know space lol.
Ah, Jane Eyre in space... how could I resist?! Unfortunately, it was a bit slow for my taste. It's been described as Jane Eyre meets The Martian. I'd say it's a lot Jane Eyre, and just a dash of The Martian. Definitely more like Jane Eyre in pace and tone. It held my interest, but barely. I just didn't really care about the characters, as there wasn't much to work with there. Preferred Brightly Burning.

After seeing this described as "Jane Eyre meets The Martian," in a @Bookwormjillk post, I couldn't resist!
20 chapters in. Pretty slow moving, but a lot of Jane Eyre vibes to grasp to, so I'm still intrigued.
This was a low pick. I loved the premise of Jane Eyre meets The Martian, but the story was a little slow for me.
Jane Eyre in the setting of The Martian. It works, if oddly.
I found this to be a page turner, but it did lose me a little toward the end. I am curious what others thought of James. Perhaps I‘m missing some symbolism, but I found him to be dark, abusive, and disturbing, but would welcome others‘ thoughts too.

This was one of the most beautifully written sci-fi novels I have ever read. We meet our MC June right after she has lost her uncle. He was a brilliant scientist working for the National Space Program and the only one who understood how brilliant June is at mechanical invention. The melancholy feeling is felt throughout the book. Really lovely writing.
🎧 Can‘t win. I read the synopsis - Jane Eyre meets The Martian & that COVER! Sci-fi, MC is smart & female, an affair in space? You got me!
Nope. Disappointment.
SO much potential! Whip smart mechanically inclined 12 year old inventor gets into space school 2 years early & the potential ends there.
On the + side with a tweak or 2 it might make an interesting movie but it‘s a boring book.
Adding a star for brainy June & the cover!

I've been procrastinating on this review because this book has been highly anticipated after I loved this author's first book, If, Then.
.
If I had realized this was intended to be Jane Eyre meets The Martian I may have gone in with more caution. ↘️
June is brilliant, growing up at the knee of her genius aeronautical engineer uncle, Peter, who dies when she is 12. She ends up at his eponymous school, groomed for a life in space and trying to learn what happened to a doomed mission. I really enjoyed Day‘s If, Then, and this is equally good. I found both the characters and story compelling and didn‘t want to stop listening.
Heard about this on the Get Booked podcast and had to read right away!
June is the niece of a famous scientist who developed fuel cells to enable extended space travel. The first astronauts using the new technology were assumed lost, but June knows they‘re still out there.
This was not your typical science fiction novel. I would almost describe it as “quiet“. This book has one of my most favorite things, melancholy. It just has this sweet sense of sadness in the writing. It‘s really beautiful and I shed a few tears. While this is a great science fiction story (Gave me major The Martian vibes in parts), it is also just a really lovely written novel. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
