In a Book Club Far Away
In a Book Club Far Away | Tif Marcelo
From the author of Once Upon a Sunset and The Key to Happily Ever After comes a heartwarming and moving novel following three Army wivesestranged friendswho must overcome their differences when one of them is desperate for help. Regina Castro, Adelaide Wilson-Chang, and Sophie Walden used to be best friends. As Army wives at Fort East, they bonded during their book club and soon became inseparable. But when an unimaginable betrayal happened amongst the group, the friendship abruptly ended, and they havent spoken since. Thats why, eight years later, Regina and Sophie are shocked when they get a call for help from Adelaide. Adelaides husband is stationed abroad, and without any friends or family near her new home of Alexandria, Virginia, she has no one to help take care of her young daughter when she has to undergo emergency surgery. For the sake of an innocent child, Regina and Sophie reluctantly put their differences aside to help an old friend. As the three women reunite, they must overcome past hurts and see if theres any future for their friendship. Featuring Tif Marcelos signature enchanting prose (Amy E. Reichert, author of The Coincidence of Coconut Cake) and the books that brought them together in the first place, In a Book Club Far Away honors the immense power of female friendship and how love can defy time, distance, and all old wounds.

Friendship bonds, loyalty, and what we owe others versus what we owe ourselves. Good characters, nice plot, and overall decent read.

Gosh, I loved this quote. "To Sophie, books always carried secret messages tailored to speak specifically to her. They were like horoscopes, giving her exactly what she needed at the moment."

Endearing and classic woman's fiction centered around their friendship and a massive misunderstanding/miscommunication/glitch in decade long friendships. Just very, very, very slow pacing.

I didn‘t want to put this book down. It was one that I didn‘t think I was going to like and I picked it up hesitantly. But, I loved it. It‘s a story about 3 women who are stationed with their husbands for the army and meet through an army book club. They grow apart and come back together and reflect on the things that tore them apart in the past. I loved the book references and the writing and thought this was a really nice and easy book to read!

I enjoyed this for its focus on military families, and the struggles they face, as well as female friendships. And books! These three women are all in the process of making career decisions & they are all examining their romantic relationships but those are tangential to the real story which is: can these women find their way back to the friendship they had 10 years ago before The Fight drove a wedge between two of them? A couple spoilers below:

bookandbedandtea Spoiler 1: I (think) I tried to be fair to her but didn't like Regina from the start and she didn't improve on me throughout the book. Her insistence on setting rules for the other two in the name of protecting her boundaries was probably supposed to come off as wise self care but it hit me as selfish. She was too focused on placing blame on her friends rather than her ex. And even herself... she had a share in that too! 3y
bookandbedandtea Spoiler 2: Sophie has a very capable man and two nearly grown up daughters so the fact that they began whining for her to come back home to take care of them after only a couple days- knowing that Adelaide had JUST had surgery and that Sophie herself wanted a little girl time- made me angry. 3y

I always sound like a broken record when it comes to my reviews of Tif Marcelo's books. It's because I see myself in her characters. For one, there's always a Filipina in her stories. And Filipino food, of course.

With this book in particular, I see myself in all three women--Regina, Adelaide, and Sophie. I'm a military spouse (Air Force, not Army) and a founding member of a book club initially comprised of military spouses.

Read this entire book and at the end I was just relieved that they all finally made a decision! Three friends that are part of military families find each other in a book club. A matter in the past has driven them apart until one gets ill and needs help. Too much indecision in this read and at the end I was just finished with the book! Blah.

4⭐
Day 2 of Tom and Jerry. The kids watched it with me yesterday and with my hubby today. I have in my #SkullCandy earbuds listening to the scanner traffic in Boulder City CO.
This Boom was a nice escape from reality, but hit close enough to home that it felt like I would fit in with these women.

Reggie Is it raining where you are? You and your family doing ok? 4y
Rissa1 Yes we are good. We are in Illinois so safe, a bit of rain today. I am the daughter of a retired volunteer firefighter, many family members who are cops or in EMS, Plus some family in CO. I am an odd duck who likes to listen to all that is going on. 4y

I admit to feeling a little limited with March‘s #BOTM choices because I already have ARCs of three of them! This is an easy and straightforward read of three women who originally met in a book club ten years earlier. In three perspectives and switching from the two timelines, the lives and relationships of these women unfold. All tied to the Army, this sheds light on those processes- and also recommends a fair amount of good books!

#waitingroomreading seems to be a thing of the past. #parkinglotreading is my current situation.

Reggie When I was younger my mom had this horrible habit of telling us she‘d be right back and go into a store to exchange stuff. 2 hours later she‘d be back. My father always had a book on him so he was never bored like me and my brother. That parking lot situation is part of how I became a reader. Lol 4y

I could not have chosen a more heartwarming and beautiful novel for this months Book of the Month. I enjoyed every moment of this book. A beautiful story about the power of love and friendship. A reminder that family is who we chose and that it takes a village, not only to raise a child, but to survive this crazy life.

Check out the link below for my full thoughts on the novel!
