If Harris had a clear vision for this book, it wasn‘ apparent to me. Witness the title which cites the sleep intervals experienced in the “early modern era” but linked to no major plot line. We are presented with a post apocalyptic world where civilization has reverted to the Middle Ages with the church in charge of both the state and piety. The nature of the apocalypse is unclear, the search for meaning muddled. The ending just plain weird.

This started out with so much potential. The story was surprising, and I had a hard time putting it down. But the end... I'd read reviews saying the ending was awful, but I assumed it was just unsatisfying or grim or something. But honestly I'm not sure I even understand what happened or what Harris was thinking. He lost me in the last 4 pages. Prior to that, it was really good.

Got a 3rd #bookspin bingo.

I'm really enjoying this one. I feel like it's one of those where the less you know going in, the better. So, I'll just say at a little under halfway I can not put it down. Except to take the picture and tell all you lovely book people how great it is so far. 😁

I got this after seeing Robert Harris talk about this book. I didn't really get the just of the book during the talk, but now it is clear.
Set in 1468 a priest goes to conduct the funeral of his predecesser. In the surrounding area there are artefacts like coins, bones which the priest used to collect. Through this the new priest the drawn into the community and with some help discovers some revelations. #bookcovers

Much better than many critics claimed and very topical. I‘ve always rated him and, for me, this is up there with his best. He‘s incredibly readable but tends to recycle and overuse what are clearly his favourite descriptive passages: variations on ‘head tilting‘ being an example. If I have one key criticism of his work overall it‘s the unlikeability of some of his main characters. I bailed on The Ghost for that very reason.

I thought I was getting a bit of a medieval thriller. Instead I got a mystery with a frightful timeline. I loved the reveal with Fairfax‘s study of the artifacts and the premise upon which the entire plot was built. A pick for those reasons but the ending was disappointing.

Good story, good characters and settings. You really want to know “what‘s going on”.
Didn‘t care for the ending, unless there is a sequel.

Herschelian Totally agree with your comments. Suspect it is the first part of a 2 or 3 book series. 5y

This started off interesting, revealed a thing about 4 chapters in that blew my mind, and introduced a bunch of interesting characters with a rather fascinating mystery by the midpoint 👍🙂... then proceeded to slowly fizzle out in the second half before culminating in a truly annoying ending. ☹👎

charl08 @Tanisha_A I have no idea where it's going, but hoping I have enough time to finish it tonight... 5y
arubabookwoman I‘m finishing up Nick Hornby‘s Ten Years in the Tub, and he regularly mentions Robert Harris, who is his brother-in-law. 5y
charl08 @arubabookwoman that's a surprising connection to me, not sure why! 5y

A cautionary tale with all the subtly of a sledgehammer to the side of the head.

Crazeedi I've enjoyed the books I've read by him, I'll have to look for this one! 5y
