Mehso-so

Although this book became a bit of a struggle to finish, I‘m giving it a so-so because there were aspects I enjoyed. I felt it gave a good sense of Lisbon, Portugal in 1936. I was originally intrigued by the character of Ricardo Reis, a pen name of real author Fernando Pessoa whose ghost is also a character in this story. However, I came to detest Ricardo Reis for his treatment of Lydia, and the ending was unsatisfactory after all those pages.

I‘m continuing to make my way through this book a few pages at a time and have made it to 60%. Reading with supper made it a bit more enjoyable tonight. I‘m still not a fan of the incredibly long paragraphs and dialogue without punctuation. I feel bad for Lydia and like Ricardo Reis less and less as the story goes on.

BarbaraBB I‘ve been dreading this one. 3y
Daisey @BarbaraBB I finished it, but by the end I was just pushing through. 3y
BarbaraBB That‘s exactly what I‘ve been afraid of. Kudos for finishing! 3y

I‘m slowly making my way through this book. I did a bit of outside reading about Ricardo Reis & Fernando Pessoa, which has helped somewhat. So far, this quote has been the most interesting to me, and I think it makes a good point.

This morning‘s arrivals 😊 Blackwells in Oxford sends their books out postage free in the UK, and (from a quick look) overseas postage seems cheap. And they include these lovely bookmarks!

BookishTrish I‘m in Canada and I love Blackwells 5y
Severnmeadows @BookishTrish I was looking for an alternative to Amazon, and Blackwells seems a fabulous book shop. One day if I go to Oxford it‘ll be a treat to visit. 5y

A man must read widely, a little of everything or whatever he can, but given the shortness of life and the verbosity of the world, not too much should be demanded of him. Let him begin with those titles no one should omit, commonly referred to as books for learning, as if not all books were for learning, and this list will vary according to the fount of knowledge one drinks from and the authority that monitors its flow.

ptkpepe98 This sounds like it will be an interesting read, based on the quote and the book jacket. Thanks for sharing 8y

Whenever I'm procrastinating (which is often) I need to remember this. Putting things off - ie NOT doing something - can wear you out.
