Mountains Wild: A Mystery | Sarah Stewart Taylor
14 posts | 10 read | 20 to read
With its evocative Dublin setting, lyrical prose, tough but sympathetic heroine, and a killer twist in the plot, Sarah Stewart Taylor's The Mountains Wild should top everyone's must-read lists this year! -- New York Times bestselling author Deborah Crombie In a series debut for fans of Tana French and Kate Atkinson, set in Dublin and New York, homicide detective Maggie D'arcy finally tackles the case that changed the course of her life. Twenty-three years ago, Maggie D'arcy's family received a call from the Dublin police. Her cousin Erin has been missing for several days. Maggie herself spent weeks in Ireland, trying to track Erin's movements, working beside the police. But it was to no avail: no trace of her was ever found. The experience inspired Maggie to become a cop. Now, back on Long Island, more than 20 years have passed. Maggie is a detective and a divorced mother of a teenager. When the Garda call to say that Erin's scarf has been found and another young woman has gone missing, Maggie returns to Ireland, awakening all the complicated feelings from the first trip. The despair and frustration of not knowing what happened to Erin. Her attraction to Erin's coworker, now a professor, who never fully explained their relationship. And her determination to solve the case, once and for all. A lyrical, deeply drawn portrait of a woman - and a country - over two decades - The Mountains Wild introduces a compelling new mystery series from a mesmerizing author.

I plan to read the tagged book this month, and I‘m stretching the #titlesandtunes #islandvibes theme to include the island of Ireland. And if your book is set in Dublin, you kind of have to pick a U2 song, right? “I Still Haven‘t Found What I‘m Looking For” seemed like a great song title to accompany a mystery. 😂

DGRachel I did try to find a more tropical island-y book to read this month, but I opted to try The Deep by Peter Benchley because the audio was on Hoopla and it would count for Reading the Americas as it is set in Bermuda, but it was SO BAD. I couldn‘t finish it. 😫 2y
Cinfhen Hahaha!! Ireland is definitely an island so good for you!! Sorry your first book was a dud 😞And honestly I LOVE U2 so im super happy with your song choice ♥️🎵🙌🏻 2y
BarbaraBB This one sounds much better indeed and I always love some U2 - on every playlist 💕 2y
DGRachel @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB Yay! This gave me an excuse to listen to various U2 albums to pick a song, so I‘m not mad about not finding a more Caribbean book. 🥳 2y

Mehso-so

This book has been compared to Tana French mysteries, which caught my attention. The only similarity is that it takes place in Ireland. I found it slow at the start, I ended up skimming through it and was never that interested. I only finished it because I'd already given up on two previous books.

Set in Long Island & Dublin.23 years ago Maggie D'arcy's
Cousin went missing in Ireland. At the time she spent weeks tracking her movements to no avail. This experience inspired her to join the LI police department, where she worked, among other things, murder cases. When the Irish Gardi let her know they had found her cousin‘s scarf, this tough, big hearted cop left her job & went to Ireland in hopes of breaking the case.

Librarybelle I just bought a copy of this! I loved her series featuring Sweeney St George, which she wrote quite awhile ago. The first one in that series is 3y
Crazeedi I've never heard of this one either!! Looks good 3y
kspenmoll @Librarybelle I will have to check out her earlier books! 3y

A 5+++ for me.
Maggie D‘arcy,a Long Island homicide detective, receives a call from the Irish Gardai, informing her that her missing cousin Erin‘s scarf has been found after 23 years. At the time Erin went missing,Maggie left NY to search for her in Ireland, working alongside the Gardai. Now she again leaves for Ireland to follow Erin‘s trail, this time determined to find answers. This time, more is at stake: another woman has gone missing like Erin.🔽

kspenmoll Ireland‘s landscape, both lush & harsh, her culture, her anguished political history, is interwoven throughout. Details of Dublin, its pubs, streets, haves and have-nots abound.Themes of diaspora, family, homeland. Maggie is a wonderfully drawn character, full of nuance & complexity & an ace of an investigator. 💜❤️☘️ 3y
Ncostell Sounds great, I am a sucker for a mystery/police procedural set in Ireland . I will have to check this one out! 3y

First book in an ongoing story that introduces detective Maggie D ‘Arcy. A committed homicide detective who is haunted by the 23 year old disappearance of her cousin. 23 years after her cousin was last seen in Ireland, a new disappearance ignites the flames when searches turned up some of Erin‘s personal belongings. Determined to solve this case, Maggie returns to Ireland. What she discovers will bring betrayal right to her front door.

My last two reads both involved mysteries in Ireland. Foley continues ratchet up the suspense.
I had not read Sarah Stewart Taylor before and I really enjoyed her characters and how she wove the story between Long Island and Ireland. I hope there's a sequel.

This is my first from this author and the start of her second mystery series, and I really enjoyed it. Maggie D‘Arcy is a Long Island homicide detective whose cousin Erin disappeared 23 years ago in Ireland while hiking. She is haunted by questions and returns there for a second time when Erin‘s scarf is discovered after another hiker goes missing. Lots of twists and turns with this one, and while perhaps overly long, it kept me invested in the 🔻

robinb story with beautifully descriptive writing and well-drawn characters, especially the wild and tormented Erin.
My only negatives were that it was told in varying timeframes/locations and could be a bit of a struggle to keep it all straight at times, and I think I caught a few inconsistencies in the story along the way. But it was still absorbing, and I will be interested in reading more from this author. 4/5⭐️ @StMartinsPress
