Morality
Morality: Restoring the Common Good in Divided Times | Jonathan Sacks
2 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
A distinguished religious leader's stirring case for reconstructing a shared framework of virtues and values With liberal democracy embattled, public discourse grown toxic, family life breaking down, and drug abuse and depression on the rise, many fear what the future holds. In Morality, respected faith leader and public intellectual Jonathan Sacks traces today's crisis to our loss of a strong, shared moral code and our elevation of self-interest over the common good. We have outsourced morality to the market and the state, but neither is capable of showing us how to live. Sacks leads readers from ancient Greece to the Enlightenment to the present day to show that there is no liberty without morality and no freedom without responsibility, arguing that we must all must play our part in rebuilding a common moral foundation. A major work of moral philosophy, Morality is an inspiring vision of a world in which we can all find our place and face the future without fear.

Bailedbailed

I decided to bail after trying for weeks to read Rabbi Sacks‘ essays on morality. I‘m having a hard time getting over some of his conservative views on family and marriage. His essay on media (Unsocial Media) fell flat for me too. I do want to get back to this book sometime later …

I may not be of the same faith, but do respect all faiths. Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks died today, and given events today, this seems a good day to remember this quote from him.

Also a good message for us to remember as we live through the Pandemic!

This quote brings you to mind @TheBookHippie

TheBookHippie 😭😭😭 May his memory be for a Blessing. The Trump supporters on the eve before the election -as Trump was in the city -damaged the Jewish Cemetery where my great grandparents and grandparents are buried. https://www.wzzm13.com/article/news/local/grand-rapids-north/trump-messages-gran... this is definitively the quote for me. 🤍 4y

BarbaraTheBibliophage Oh @TheBookHippie — I‘m so sorry about the cemetery. Please let me (or us) know if there‘s any fundraising to fix the damage. I‘d like to contribute. @Andrew65 Thank you for this quote. 4y

Andrew65 @kspenmoll Sadly yes, we need to build on this moment across the world, a time for new hope. I am one of three head teachers, alongside other key people, in our local education authority working on a new curriculum based on equity and diversity. 4y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I just found out a couple days ago of Lord Rabbi Sacks passing. He was an amazing man, his words are a blessing to all who have listened to him. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. Blessed be the Name of the Lord 4y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi It would have been at the height of all the election talk last weekend. Smothered by that. 4y
