The sense of foreboding in the slim book was so well done! I worried at every turn of the page. Mary is sent off by her father to work for the Vicar and help take care of his ailing wife. Although the home she left was harsh and full of backbreaking labor she laments the lack of choice she is given. I won‘t lie, this book was bleak but I thought it was really effective. #24in2024

Didn't get a snow day, surprise surprise! Finished this during my lunch today. Quick read, but man, it is a hard one. I actually loved the writing style but it is definitely not for everyone.

Browsing books at the library I spotted this title I had heard of before but knew nothing about. But the first page made me close it and put it away (after taking a photo that is) because I don‘t think I can read a book which has no capitalization. It may be kinda anal of me but I just can‘t. I also can‘t read books with too much italics.
Does anything like that turn you off books?

Ottergirl I can be put off by lots of different changes of narrator, or jumping about in time. I had to bail on Lincoln in the Bardo because of all the quotes at the beginning 7y

PenguinInFlight I am a hardcore grammar nerd, so it would probably cause me to twitch and foam at the mouth, LOL. 😂 I think that‘s why I don‘t enjoy most poetry, now that I think about it, because it tends not to follow grammatical rules. 7y

readordierachel This would throw me too. And too many italics! It was one of the reasons I didn't like Night Film by Marisha Pessl. So many random italics. 7y

In 1830, a 15 year old farm girl is sent by her father to work as servant for a local married vicar. The story is told through her journal in a simple distinctive voice. Spare writing. Small book that packs a big punch. The tension builds, but I did not foresee the ending. Wow!
