Almond Blossoms and Beyond
Almond Blossoms and Beyond | Mahmoud Darwish
2 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
new in paperback:The first English translation of recent poetry by the late Mahmoud Darwish, the most important Palestinian contemporary poet. Almond Blossoms and Beyond is one of the last collections of poetry that Mahmoud Darwish left to the world. Composed of brief lyric poems and the magnificent sustained Exile cycle, Almond Blossoms holds an important place in Darwishs unparalleled oeuvre. It distills his late style, in which, though the specter of death looms and weddings turn to funerals, he threads the pulses and fragilities and beauties of life into the lines of his poems. Their liveliness is his own response to the collections final call to bid Farewell / Farewell, to the poetry of pain.

"I'll drink from the garden tap a handful of water.
I am as thirsty as water desiring itself.
I'll ask the first to cross the path,
Have you ever seen a ghost like me,
searching for his yesterday?
I'll carry my house on my shoulder
and walk like a slow tortoise.
I'll hunt an eagle with a broom, and ask,
In what way have I sinned?"

Mahmoud Darwish is the Palestinian national poet, and I highly, highly recommend reading his work. This is one of his last collections of poetry, consisting of shorter lyric poems and a gorgeous Exile cycle. Beautiful translation work by Mohammad Shaheen. ❤️
