The Virgin Suicides meets Little Fires Everywhere: inspired by a true story, this haunting novel pieces together a chorus of voices to explore the aftermath of a college student's deathOn a cold day in 1997, student Sara Morgan was killed in the woods surrounding her liberal arts college in upstate New York. Her boyfriend, Blake Campbell, confessed, his plea of temporary insanity raising more questions than it answered. In the aftermath of his acquittal, the case comes to haunt a strange and surprising network of community members, from the young woman who discovers Sara's body to the junior reporter who senses its connection to convicted local serial killer John Logan. As the years pass, others search for retribution or explanation: including Sara's half-sister who, stifled by her family's bereft silence about Blake, poses as a babysitter and seeks out her own form of justice, while the teenager Sara used to babysit starts writing to Logan in prison. A propulsive, taut tale of voyeurism and obsession, Nothing Can Hurt You dares to examine gendered violence not as an anomaly, but as the very core of everyday life. Tracing the concentric circles of violence rippling out from Sara's murder, Nicole Maye Goldberg masterfully conducts an unforgettable chorus of disparate voices.

Started this a couple days ago and finished it this morning, so I guess that makes this my first book of 2023. This is a beautifully written, non-linear story of how the violent death of a college student affects the lives of several people. You don‘t spend a lot of time with any of these characters so I wasn‘t attached to any of them, but I enjoyed the writing and the ambiguity of the narrative.

Really not what I was expecting, but that doesn‘t mean it was bad. It was nice to have something different

This is a short, but powerful read. A multi-voice story that examines the shockwaves of gendered violence. Although focuses on one case, Goldberg‘s book considers gendered-violence its many forms, from overt to covert. CW: sexual assault and violence

An incredibly clever, multi-voiced novel which subverts all the “dead girl” narrative tropes in a thoughtful, measured way. Murdered girls (killed by a serial killer, or a boyfriend) are still the centre of Goldberg‘s novel. Instead of sensationalising this victim hood, Goldberg explores the ripples these murders make in ordinary lives. In doing so, Goldberg has a lot to say about our relationship with dead girl narratives.

A short yet powerful book which deales with the aftermath of a murdered young woman. Each chapter is a person who had some kind of connection to the dead woman, half-sister, a reporter, janitor, the person who found the body. #books

Nothing Can Hurt You follows the ripple effects of a momentous act, and in so doing reveals how gender-based violence exists in our day-to-day lives. This is a thriller for the #MeToo era, one that examines how and why male killers become celebrities while female victims are forgotten. Mehso-so

This was a different kind of read. It‘s based on a true story, which is cool, and told through multiple perspectives, which is sometimes cool, sometimes not. Most of it was an intriguing read, but sometimes I was frustrated with so much jumping around with the chapters, and I didn‘t care for the ending. 😜

Wow! I mean it‘s definitely not a thriller, since we know the players and what happened right away, but a story of the effects of violence on female bodies. It‘s wonderful and sad.

Finally a suspense novel with an inventive style! It‘s told from a wide variety of characters who have all been affected by the same murder of a young college student. It felt so compelling and was a definite page-turner for me! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #arc
