The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor

'On February 22 we were told that we would be returning to Columbia.' In 1955, eight crew members of Caldas, a Colombian destroyer, were swept overboard. Velasco alone survived, drifting on a raft for ten days without food or water. Mrquez retells the survivor's amazing tale of endurance, from his loneliness and thirst to his determination to survive. The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor was Mrquez's first major, and controversial, work, published in a Colombian newspaper, El Espectador, in 1955 and then in book form in 1970. .

Before he was a famous novelist, Garcia Marquez was a journalist. It's no surprise that an article he wrote for 'El Espectador' about a Colombian naval officer who was washed overboard and spent 10 days adrift in the Caribbean Sea was eventually made into this book. It's the quintessential "man vs. nature" narrative, incredibly harrowing. The reason that sailor was even on the water in the first place caused a major controversy when revealed.

Enjoying a nice rainy, foggy day! My intention is to participate in the October photo challenge everyday, but I think 50% might be a more realistic goal for me!! #booktober

You probably know or have read Gabriel García Márquez. I gravitare toward his old works. This book is a mix of journalism and magical realism. This is my Latin American pick for today.
