Cicero
Cicero: The Life and Times of Rome's Greatest Politician | Anthony Everitt
6 posts | 8 read | 28 to read
All ages of the world have not produced a greater statesman and philosopher combined. John Adams He squared off against Caesar and was friends with young Brutus. He advised the legendary Pompey on his somewhat botched transition from military hero to politician. He lambasted Mark Antony and was master of the smear campaign, as feared for his wit as he was for exposing his opponents sexual peccadilloes. Brilliant, voluble, cranky, a genius of political manipulation but also a true patriot and idealist, Cicero was Romes most feared politician, one of the greatest lawyers and statesmen of all times. Machiavelli, Queen Elizabeth, John Adams and Winston Churchill all studied his example. No man has loomed larger in the political history of mankind. In this dynamic and engaging biography, Anthony Everitt plunges us into the fascinating, scandal-ridden world of ancient Rome in its most glorious heyday. Accessible to us through his legendary speeches but also through an unrivaled collection of unguarded letters to his close friend Atticus, Cicero comes to life in these pages as a witty and cunning political operator. Cicero leapt onto the public stage at twenty-six, came of age during Spartacus famous revolt of the gladiators and presided over Roman law and politics for almost half a century. He foiled the legendary Catiline conspiracy, advised Pompey, the victorious general who brought the Middle East under Roman rule, and fought to mobilize the Senate against Caesar. He witnessed the conquest of Gaul, the civil war that followed and Caesars dictatorship and assassination. Cicero was a legendary defender of freedom and a model, later, to French and American revolutionaries who saw themselves as following in his footsteps in their resistance to tyranny. Anthony Everitts biography paints a caustic picture of Roman politicswhere Senators were endlessly filibustering legislation, walking out, rigging the calendar and exposing one anothers sexual escapades, real or imagined, to discredit their opponents. This was a time before slander and libel laws, and the storiesabout dubious pardons, campaign finance scandals, widespread corruption, buying and rigging votes, wife-swapping, and so onmake the Lewinsky affair and the U.S. Congress seem chaste. Cicero was a wily political operator. As a lawyer, he knew no equal. Boastful, often incapable of making up his mind, emotional enough to wander through the woods weeping when his beloved daughter died in childbirth, he emerges in these pages as intensely human, yet he was also the most eloquent and astute witness to the last days of Republican Rome. On Cicero: He taught us how to think." Voltaire I tasted the beauties of language, I breathed the spirit of freedom, and I imbibed from his precepts and examples the public and private sense of a man. Edward Gibbon Who was Cicero: a great speaker or a demagogue? Fidel Castro From the Hardcover edition.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

Do you enjoy biographies? I love 'em! I usually listen to them on audio. I want to make a point of next year reading your favorite, so which was your favorite bio that you read this year? I'll start making a list & then I'll check it twice 😆😜. I read so many great ones in 2016, & my favorite is probably this one about Cicero. What an extraordinary man in an extraordinary time! It was presented well & the narrator was great! 5 stars! #BestBioRead

Amandajoy I usually read more, but only got a couple in this year. This one on Roald Dahl was fascinating. 8y
Nat_Reads The Professor and the Madman-its a wildly interesting tale about the creation of the OED; bio (ish) of the two primary figures. Currently reading the Alexander Hamilton and its great 👍 8y

LitsyGoesPostal 😁👏🏻👏🏻 8y
chlobee It combines the author's story with beautiful writing and a literary biography of T. H. White. And ferocious hawks. 👍 I would also second Lab Girl! 8y
Centique Did you ever read Wild Swans? That's probably the book that made me fall in love with biographies and memoirs. I hand sold a tonne of those as a student working in a bookshop too. 8y
I-read-and-eat If you liked this book in Cicero you might enjoy my favourite bio read this year about Caligula. Cicero fought to maintain the republic and failed and Caligula might be one of the best examples why having an emperor is not the best idea 😂 This biography is great and doesn't just focus on him being crazy 8y
Alisnazzy If autobiography is ok I would highly recommend Armenian Golgotha. But have some tissues handy. 8y
Zelma I posted in another thread, but will repeat here in case you miss it. My absolute favorite biography is Lindbergh by A. Scott Berg. He is a fantastic writer and creates a fascinating and detailed story. 8y

Pickpick

Before this book, all I knew about Cicero was that he was a great Roman orator. Little did I know how powerful and influential he truly was & is through today! He lived through some of history's most important events--when the Roman Empire ended as a Republic & became a dictatorship--and knew some of its most famous people--Julius Caesar, Cato, Cleopatra, Augustus, etc. A+ audio narration! #PairWith: Capezzana Conti Contini Sangiovese, room temp.

Eugeniavb We should create a hashtag for history books! 8y
niftytiffd I visited his tomb when I was in Italy about 5 years ago. -I'd love to learn more about his life. Thanks for the recommendation😊 8y

Eugeniavb #historyread sounds 👌🏽 8y
sneirr Cicero is such an interesting person! My favourite fact about him - well let's say, one of my favourite facts - is that he actually wrote an epic about himself. Also apparently he wasn't part of the conspiracy agains Caesar because he would have boasted about it and so betray the plan (not sure how factual that is). 8y
Laalaleighh Fascinating. Stacking 📚 8y
niftytiffd @MrBook Lol. Yes... it was amazing (and not as creepy as it sounds😉)! -I was studying abroad and the class was Archaeology of Roman Italy. I'd love a hashtag for history books! #historyread is a great suggestion👍 @Eugeniavb @MrBook 8y
