Selected Letters | Virginia Woolf

The finest and most enjoyable of Virginia Woolf s letters are brought together in a single volume. It is a marvellous collection spontaneous, witty, often flirtatious and powerfully moving. Whether bemoaning some domestic travail, commenting publicly on

"I don't suppose I am very fond of anyone.
(...) Take away my affections and I should be like sea weed out of water; like the shell of a cabeça, like a husk. All my entrails, light, marrom, juice, pulp would be gone. I should be blown into the first puddle and drown. Take away my love for my friends and my curiosity of human life and I should be nothing but a membrana, a fibre, uncoloured, lifeless to be thrown away like any other excreta."

In spite of its end, at 59, hers does not seem a tragic life. After all, why should a life be judged by its eleventh hour? Surely that's too literary. For her and for her family, her mental illness was truly terrible, but for decades she was sane, prolific and inventively comic. In the end her supporting web dissolved completely. She could only throw one thin line to Vanessa and two to Leonard before giving over her fragmented self to the waters.

A wonderful gift! I have a bit of a love affair with letters, and Virginia Woolf's are a particular favourite. Thank you, sister!
