Primary Politics: Everything You Need to Know about How America Nominates Its Presidential Candidates | Elaine Kamarck
2 posts | 1 read
The 2016 presidential primaries are on the horizon and this new edition of Elaine Kamarck's Primary Politics will be there to help make sense of them. Updated to include the 2012 election, it will once again be the guide to understanding the modern nominating system and some of its arcana, including the "robot rule." In Primary Politics, political insider Elaine Kamarck explains how the presidential nomination process became the often baffling system we have today. Her focus is the largely untold story of how presidential candidates since the early 1970s have sought to alter the rules in their favor and how their failures and successes have led to even more change. She describes how candidates have sought to manipulate the sequencing of primaries to their advantage and how Iowa and New Hampshire came to dominate the system. She analyzes the rules that are used to translate votes into delegates, paying special attention to the Democrats' twenty-year fight over proportional representation. Drawing on meticulous research, interviews with key figures in both parties, and years of experience, this book explores one of the most important questions in American politicshow we narrow the list of presidential candidates every four years.

“In an effort to better educate myself, I‘ve decided to add another challenge for this year. I want to read at least 1 book by/about each of the presidential candidates for 2020. (I‘m “speculating” on a couple of these, but I‘m betting they‘ll be in the race.) Would anyone like to join me on this challenge? I can make up a google doc with the candidates & their books as they announce they are running & share it.” @MelissaSue81

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I had to cut your text a bit to make it fit, I hope that‘s ok. @MelissaSue81 6y
MelissaSue81 @CSeydel - That‘s Elizabeth Warren? I came across that and another book that I wasn‘t sure was the same person. I will add those to my list. 6y

BeansPage Awesome idea!!! 💖👍🏻 6y
CSeydel @MelissaSue81 It sure is. You can see her discussing it, in 2004, here: https://youtu.be/8GHg3GAeQ1Y. A very interesting interview in light of what ended up happening over the next 5 years. 6y
DivineDiana @MelissaSue81 I tried the link to your list, and unfortunately, it seems to be broken. 😕 6y
MelissaSue81 @DivineDiana - I think I fixed it. Try it now. :) 6y
DivineDiana @MelissaSue81 Done! 👏🏻👍🏻📚 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @MelissaSue81 it works now, and I believe Amy Klobuchar announced now too. (edited) 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @MelissaSue81 Nevermind, I‘m wrong, it was a fans announcement logo, not her....yet... 6y
CoffeeK8 Great idea! 6y
InLibrisVeritas This is such a good idea! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m down with this. Already read the Biden, which I loved. Most of the others are on my TBR. 6y
Daisey @MelissaSue81 These are not the type of books I generally enjoy, but I know I should be working harder to be better informed. Thanks for a great idea that will hopefully motivate me to read (or more likely listen to) more of these! @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thanks for sharing! 6y
MelissaSue81 @Daisey - honestly a year ago, I would have told you that I DON‘T read political books, but I have pushed myself a bit out of my comfort zone. I do much prefer the audio format for most of them. And some of them are just tough to get through.. but I really do want to know more about all the candidates. 6y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I do not need another challenge, I do not need another challenge.... but yes, I need to do this too! Before 2016 I read a bunch of issue books about the environmental crisis, the wars, etc because I wanted to be knowledgeable when I watched the debates...who would have guessed all of that never came up, but I think it was worthwhile for me either way. So yep, sign me up! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Do you want me to repost this on my wall too? 6y
alisiakae Tulsi Gabbard has announced as well.I read one of Elizabeth Warren‘s books a few years ago and really, really liked it. 6y

Chrissyreadit How am I just seeing this??? You are brilliant! 5y
MelissaSue81 @Chrissyreadit - still plenty of time to join in! 5 months later I have read: Castro, Sanders, Booker, Biden, Buttigieg, Harris, Gillibrand, Warren, Hickenlooper, Klobuchar, O‘Rourke, and Yang. Have not gotten to Gabbard, Inslee, Bennet, Ryan, Delaney, or Williamson. 5y
Chrissyreadit @MelissaSue81 has it changed any of your thoughts regarding candidates? 5y
MelissaSue81 @Chrissyreadit - it has! I thought Warren, Buttigieg and Gillibrand had fantastic books..I read Pete‘s before he had gained any national traction on him and was so impressed. I‘m not a big Sanders‘ fan this time around but his books are solid. Did not like Kamala‘s book, and for better or worse, it has sort of made me question her. 5y
Chrissyreadit Thanks for sharing your perspective! I‘m going to try and read as many as I can. 5y
