Drinking: A Love Story | Caroline Knapp
18 posts | 37 read | 23 to read
Fifteen million Americans a year are plagued with alcoholism. Five million of them are women. Many of them, like Caroline Knapp, started in their early teens and began to use alcohol as "liquid armor," a way to protect themselves against the difficult realities of life. In this extraordinarily candid and revealing memoir, Knapp offers important insights not only about alcoholism, but about life itself and how we learn to cope with it.

#bookmoods #aboutaddiction I read drinking memoirs often, many in my orbit have had issues with alcohol.I think people write them to help themselves stay in recovery and perhaps think that their story will help someone else realize they might have a problem. I liked both of these a lot.

Eggs I like alcohol/other addiction stories too-it‘s the vulnerability and hard truths that are appealing 🤷‍♀️ (edited) 3y
Leftcoastzen @Eggs indeed , while they are in it , so much denial , vulnerability & facing hard truths help them pull out of it. 3y

I think the metaphor and writing was very good, but in a lot of ways I found this hard to relate to and dry. It just felt very impersonal to me.

The tagged book is a heartbreaking story and has nothing to do with this photo of my priceless napkin art drawn by my handsome Vegas travel partner on our plane. We had the best time and laughed together all week, raising plently of glasses in cheers along the way. I'm tired and haven't read a word, but happy and a little more tanned. 😍

ValerieAndBooks Cute!! I'm glad you both had a great time 😊 7y

Knapp's painful, honest memoir of her alcoholism and related struggles really touched me and made me take a deeper look at my own relationship with alcohol. Though it has a little repetition and some sweeping generalities about alcoholics, this was a great book.

Powerful story, honestly and openly written. Made me think about the role alcohol plays in our society and in my life. The author passed away a few months ago, what a loss to us all.

LauraBeth I loved this book 8y

I'm not sure if there is a difference between an autobiography and a memoir but here are some memoirs that have had a huge impact on my life. #readjanuary #autobiography

The library glued the dust cover to the book upside down. Reading this one in public could be interesting. 🙃

Zelma 😂 that is pretty funny. 8y

Clare: "It's the memoir of a young woman who was a successful writer and also an alcoholic. She passed away at age 40, a few years after this book was published. I have experience with alcoholism in my family and I've always been aware of it. Abuse of alcohol gets taken too lightly - especially by young people. The line between using it and abusing it can be really thin. This book makes you think about your own habits in a more critical way."

SealedWithInk I would be very interested to read this. Although alcohol and writing are linked together romantically, you have to remember the dangers of alcoholism, to both the person and the people around them. 8y

At heart all addictions are driven by the same impulses and most accomplish the same goals; you just use a different substance, or take a slightly different path, to get there.

zembla Poor @ryanvoid, dating a librarian (me). When he started quitting smoking, I reread this book and sent him my Kindle highlights. He lamented the difficulty of quitting, and I said, "I just feel like if you read my highlights..." We laughed, but the hell of it is, when he read them? THEY HELPED. 9y

This was giving to me by @Readaholics and at first I read it cause I loved the title but soon I was drawn in. Read it in almost one sitting. It's raw and so honest and written by a woman, which is so different. I was extremely impressed. Given it to many people.
