Olivia arrives at her mother?s chateau in rural France (the first time in more than a decade) with her two young children in tow. Soon the family is joined by Olivia?s brother Marcus and his wife Sophie?but this reunion is far from joyful. After years of desperately wanting a baby, Sophie has just given birth to a stillborn child, and she is struggling to overcome her devastation. Meanwhile, Olivia wrestles with her own secrets about the cruel and violent man she married many years before. Exquisitely written and reminiscent of Ian McEwan and J. M. Coetzee, Disquiet is a darkly beautiful and atmospheric story that will linger in the mind long after the final page is turned.

‘They stood before the great gateway, all around an empty and open countryside, ugly countryside, flat mud-ploughed field.‘

A Gothic tale of a prodigal daughter‘s homecoming to the family chateau.

I couldn't have come up with a better title for this book. I felt off kilter the entire time I read this book. I'm not sure I grasped exactly what was going on, but I couldn't stop reading it. It's a short read that I'll be revisiting because I have suspicions. Good stuff.

8leagueboot Also, do I spot a Toni Morrison blurb at the base? That's always enough for me! 8y
readingonarainyday I love that cover! Definitely looks good so I would like to read it as well! 8y

My youngest became more and more demanding of my attention as the weekend went on and as much as I'd like to finish my fifth book during #24in48, she is much more important. ☺️

I had a wonderful experience and I'm so happy to have taken part. Many thanks to @24in48 and @Litsy for everything. What a weekend!

Twocougs You rocked! Be proud of yourself 8y
moranadatter I second what @Twocougs said. 4 books in one weekend! 8y

I cannot believe I'm stating my 5th book of the weekend! Given that it's only 119 pages, I might even finish it. All told, I probably will only hit 18ish hours today, but I'm calling #24in48 a success!! 🎉🎈🎉🎈🎉🎊

In my past read-a-thon experiences, I need to have variety, some quick reads, and some non-traditional books. Here's the stack I've culled from my shelves for the 24in48 event. I'm getting pretty excited!

Reviewsbylola I need to start putting together a stack too. Looks like you have a good variety. 8y
thebookmagpie Persepolis! 8y
Sydsavvy I enjoyed this one- a good variety for your stack 8y

BookishFeminist I loved What We See When We Read & Persepolis! Great Readathon choices--I tend to go for more visually oriented stuff too in order to prevent eye strain. 8y
LitHousewife @BookishFeminist That was what I was thinking. This will be fun. 😊 8y
