This book was absolutely heart wrenching in the best ways possible. It highlights the importance of friendships and how to overcome our own challenges throughout our lives.

This book is a contemporary realistic fiction novel of a young boy, seventh grader, who has a cancerous tumor in his eye. Published in 2020, this book is about the struggles of a middle schooler and friends and the awkwardness of life while battling cancer. He hates the attention and wishes he was invisible until the end it captivates you with the story of growing up and battling our own problems.

Here are the ones I‘ll be reading for #MiddleGradeMarch #MiddleGradeMarchThroughTime . I won‘t be able to read all of them but it‘s good to know I have these to pick from. The timeline is from early 19th century to present day. I may or may not swap some of these with others, as I‘m a mood reader. 👌

Great middle grade book about a middle school boy who gets a rare eye cancer, and the weirdness of negotiating it with his friends, family and health staff. Along the way he makes new friends, learns guitar and learns to accept himself. ❤️

Sooooooo so good. A must-own for any school library. This is my first book by Harrell, and he does a great job showing all the layers of Ross‘s situation: anger, humor, embarrassment, friendship, fear, growth, etc. Ross and his friends and family were really believable and had their own perspectives. It was just really well done!

A friend texted me to ask if I‘d read this and my thoughts, so I borrowed it from my local public library. Surprisingly, I liked this a lot! It‘s an #OwnVoices story about surviving middle school while also dealing with a rare eye cancer. It was sweet and funny and didn‘t fall into the tropes a lot of authors put in about disabled people. (One drawback: Lots of ableist slurs.) This one‘s a rec!

This one sounds super cute and like it might break my heart. Bring it, Rob Harrell.

I whizzed through this, I loved the story of Ross Malory and thought the author did a great job of relaying his own personal experiences as an adult through the eyes of a child.
Think this was aimed at a younger audience as it deals in depth with school, social isolation Ross felt with his peers and bullying but I think it could resonate with adults too as the story itself and subject matter could affect anyone and cross boundaries.

I have read other Rob Harrell books and liked them so I hope this is the same.
