Studio Ghibli: The Films of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata | Colin Odell, Michelle Le Blanc
4 posts | 1 read
The animations of Japans Studio Ghibli are amongst the highest regarded in the movie industry. Their delightful films rank alongside the most popular non-English language films ever made, with each new eagerly-anticipated release a guaranteed box-office smash. Yet this highly profitable studio has remained fiercely independent, producing a stream of imaginative and individual animations. The studios founders, long-time animators Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki, have created timeless masterpieces. Although their films are distinctly Japanese their themes are universalhumanity, community, and a love for the environment. No other film studio, animation or otherwise, comes close to matching Ghibli for pure cinematic experience. All their major works are examined here, as well the early output of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, exploring the cultural and thematic threads that bind these films together.

Informative and great analysis on many of Ghiblis films. I love the comparing of technology and female protagonists to our current issues in society such as climate change, war, and objectification.

Okay Littens, readers advisory time. What should my friend buy for his 17 year old niece who likes Korean anime and is in a goth phase? Other than Korean anime. Novels? Short stories? I'd welcome all suggestions!

Bambolina_81 How about some Murakami? Kafka on the Shore perhaps or some of his short stories? They're a little dark at times and make you think! 8y
Gleefulreader Maybe some Murakami? 8y
RanaElizabeth This might sound weird but what about A Monster Calls? The artwork might really appeal to her and well, the story and colors are pretty goth. 8y

ReadingEnvy @RanaElizabeth I've never read that... will look into it! Ty! 8y
RanaElizabeth What about Howl's Moving Castle book series? She might have already seen the film. 8y
AGirlAndHerBooks Sometimes those into anime also fans of drawing anime ... if that's the case, perhaps a sketch pad or journal book with a nice set of pencils/markers/pens? 8y
RanaElizabeth Much more fantasy than anime, but what about Monstress by Marjorie Liu? 8y
LadyChristy If she's at all into comics/graphic novels, I cannot recommend this enough! (edited) 8y
LadyChristy Hahaha, great minds think alike, @RanaElizabeth 😝 8y
DogMomIrene So the teens I've known who got into goth would publicly kind of scorn anything "romance" but they actually loved the right novel. I'm thinking Atonement by Ian McEwan may be dark enough for her. Or The House at Riverton by Kate Morton. Both of these would also require a love of historical settings, though... 8y
ReadingEnvy @AGirlAndHerBooks oh good thinking 8y
ReadingEnvy @RanaElizabeth @LadyChristy this sounds like just the ticket, also recommended sandman series since it's pretty gothy!!! 8y
ReadingEnvy @ocdIrene oh interesting I'll pass them along. 8y
mouchette @Foxyfictionista I think this is a perfect choice! 8y
