Watts‘ debut novel examines emotional and environmental trauma through the narrator‘s experiences as a recent uni graduate now working in an emergency services call centre. It is raw and at times a little unhinged but such an accurate portrayal of that period of life for a woman in her early 20s where it is so easy for things to start to unravel and so difficult to see the way out. Well, at least it sometimes felt that way. Loved it.

CarolynM I liked this one a lot too🙂 5mo
mjtwo @CarolynM I think your review may have been the reason I bought it - it has been sitting on my shelf for a while. 5mo

I‘m not really sure what I think of this book. I feel like it tries to do too much, showing the challenges of being a young woman in the world while equating this with extreme weather driven by climate change and wrapping in some Australian history. But it‘s intriguing and made me think, so I‘ll give it a pick.

I read a lot if books about young women struggling to find their way in the world during 2021. This was one of the best.

When I started this it was a blissful spring (summer like) day now it‘s storming & I‘m cooking my bro in law‘s stroganoff recipe for dinner! Wonders never cease. I‘m hooked. Lockdown will be over when I wake up tomorrow but I still feel nervous even though I‘m double vaxed. How will I ever cope with going back to my hectic, old life. Truth is I probably won‘t as rates of covid are still high here & local vax rates are lower than the Oz average.

TrishB Take it at your own pace, that‘s all you can do. 3y
CarolynM I know what you mean. I want to get to of lockdown but I'm nervous about being exposed to the virus. We've still got about a month to go, so hopefully the vax rates will be a lot higher by the time we get out. Take care😘 3y
MrsMalaprop Good luck with it all. I think we are still the lowest here in WA at 51% double vaxed. Enjoy the stroganoff- yum! 😋 3y

Jeg Hope all goes well with the opening up. Time will tell. 3y
tokorowilliamwallace I used to love strogonoff as child! I haven't had it quite some time now, though. What's the white wine? I'm thinking a dry white with mineral notes would fit. Do you like to thematically pair your drinks/wine to your reading lists or books you're currently reading? 3y
LapReader Nope @tokorowilliamwallace This bottle just happened to have a picture of a book on it. That‘s why it is lucky enough to be in this picture. I drink according to the weather and time. Champagne or sem sav Blanc with lunch and a Shiraz with dinner. Unless it‘s winter then it‘s red wine all the way. 3y
tokorowilliamwallace @LapReader, I should try that, champagne for lunch or out on the front porch during the day. My preferences are Malbec, Bordeaux, montepulciano and the Spanish/Portuguese spicy wines. 3y

Of all the books I've read recently about messed up young women engaging in self destructive behaviour, this is far and away the best. It is beautifully written and uses the backdrop of the harsh landscape & climate of Australia, growing relentlessly more severe as global warming intensifies, most effectively. It was on the Miles Franklin Shortlist but didn't win. I'll have to read the winner now!

Ruthiella Stacking! Those books are like catnip to me! 3y
CarolynM @Ruthiella I'd definitely recommend this one. Unlike most of the others, there was nothing gratuitous and I never felt that the author was just trying to shock. While I didn't like the narrator's choices, I always felt sympathetic to her. 3y
JamieArc That cover isn‘t bad to look at either 😍 3y

LapReader I‘m almost done with mine. Can‘t wait to hear what you guys think. It goes with your theme that‘s for sure! 3y
Centique That‘s high praise! I would stack it on that wonderful recc but I already have it stacked 😍 3y
Centique How are you doing? I hope you‘re able to keep your spirits up. It sure is an emotional rollercoaster to go through these lockdowns. 😔 Wishing you and yours all the best xxx 3y
CarolynM @Centique I think @JennyM gave it a rave review too, that's probably when you stacked it. Thanks for thinking of us 😘 We're OK here (apart from my daughter having injured her foot, but that's another story). It looks like we'll be out of lockdown soon, touch wood. Sydney, on the other hand, will be suffering for a while. 3y
JennyM I‘m so glad you enjoyed it, too. One of my fave books from last year. Hope the end of lockdown is coming for you soon 🤞 3y

Absolutely brilliant novel. The cadence and flow reminds me a bit of Anna Burns‘ Milkman. This novel uses the story of an aimless, stressed, depressed and reckless twenty something woman to speak about climate change and our responsibility to the planet. I can tell already that this will be a 2021 favorite. #ARC #Netgalley

JennyM Of the best books I‘ve read in a long time! 4y

I‘m at a loss to fully describe how amazing this book is, other than to say that it‘s pretty much hands down my best read of 2020. It‘s climate change in Australia right now - the bushfires, relentless heatwaves and floods. The style of writing is also perfection and the message is urgent and more important than ever. Highly recommend. #ozfiction

TrishB Stacked 👍🏻 4y
JennyM @TrishB I don‘t want to curse it with over hype, Trish, but it also reminded me of The Bell Jar - I really hope you enjoy it 🤞 4y

It is a beautifully written, almost poetic tale of a young woman and her coming of age, her realisation that the world is slowly falling apart. From climate change, Bush fires, personal drama and an overall feeling of disquiet.

I found this to be a gentle read, dreamy but with this feeling of unease too. Brilliant, thought provoking, slightly melancholy and really gently captivating.

Tanisha_A This sounds good! 5y
Lel2403 @Tanisha_A I really enjoyed it. It‘s a bit different...very dreamish 5y
